Jokers and Good Vs Evil

There seem to be inherent problems in making a third incarnation of Stargate.

The first is that the franchise is dependent on having a Jack O'niell type in the lead, as in flippant, wise cracking and slightly dumn technically. This is on account of this being a key element of the show retaining humour and avoiding over indulgence in science. this is evident in the similarity in character type to O'niell in the principal leads of the recent seasons of SG-1 and Atlantis.

There is also a consistency of requiring a show to be based around the discovery of an expanded area of traversability which draws the attention of a threat to the safety of mankind. Although this 'good vs evil' dynamic is arguably a constant in all action orientated entertainment it is particularly apparent with Stargate.

Although these franchise requirments have produced two entertaining shows, it seems somehow possible that they will become overly apparent if attempted as the central basis of a third, and there will be a major case of franchise fatigue and any new incarnation will fail, at least on a critical level.

The only solution I can see is to explore new personality types for the principal leads, and further develop the show's sense of mystery. The most appealing episodes of Stargate always seemed to be the ones which offered some sense of an unnatural or inexpicable scenario, which would be uravelled as the show progressed. When it came to watching the big two part episodes, I would often lose any sense of excitement on account of the probability that they would simply represent a predictable story of conflict.
