Newbie. :p Joined today, and donated!

 The average price of a single new CD is $14-$24, US; a DVD, anywhere from $14-$49 US; and series collections run anywhere from $39-$159 US -- depending on the artist, subject matter, age and popularity of the piece.

I love SF, but the MPAA and TPA (Television Producers Association) are killing it by degrees (see Boxleitner's most recent commentaries -- in the UK, I might ad...). And, the more they squash it, the more its going to go into the hands of "rebels," if for nothing else than to be "keepers of the flame," so to speak.

And in the US lately, I'm sorry to say, we're going to need a LOT of flame keepers lest spirit and hope die. It isn't just sharing; it isn't just SF -- that's just the tip of the iceberg. This country is becoming the very thing many 'rebel movies' of the '70s (Rollerball, The Running Man, etc.) and Babylon 5 warned us of: self-serving conservative politicos and corporati, in bed together, and who care only for their own gain -- to hell with the rest of us, save for whatever restrictions they can impose on us proletariat to keep us from challenging their straggle-hold on the world...

I'm more that happy to contribute to at least one flame keeper who's helped out a lot...

If you guys had been reading Nite's blog you would know that the terms of the settlement offered by the MPAA indicate that all donations to him or to niteshdw.com will go directly to the MPAA, and he wont see a dime. So why would you donate to the MPAA?

Absolutely right I hope that the visitors from slyck and digg have been pressing that button. By all accounts Nite has become a Celebrity :) Our friends on these sites have as much to lose as we do.

Here's another way to help althought it will only apply to a tiny minority. I'm in the process of transferring a website over to Nite's server

and have arranged to pay him the same amount.

Is there anyone else paying for hosting who could transfer or do you know anyone who does?

I'll probibly be donating as well.

Donating for hosting BT seems to be going to the MPAA (by their stipulations in the settlement), but I also assume Nite needs donations for hosting the boards, too.

Nite, will donations to run the boards also be used as lein by the MPAA? Or would you get them (which is only fair)?

(a longish-time lurker, unlurking....)

Who mentioned BT sites?

People need to read before they open their fingers to reply!

Do you not know a business in your locality (eg a hardware shop) or anything else.

Think before you reply or at least read the post properly!

Would it be possible for NiteShdw to join in a class action suit against the MMPA with other torrent sites like TorrentSpy or Torrent Reactor. What they are doing is essentially defamation, NiteShdw might not have the money or clout to go it alone, but if he teamed up with some of the big boys they could probably get the case thrown out.

Unfortunately I don't think that would work primarily because the sites you mention are SEARCH ENGINES not torrent sites!

TorrentSpy's defense seems to be that they are providing a service similar to google which is true, they didn't host ant torrent files.

Donated and count me in on monthly donations. I get a small allowance each month from my husband but I think I can manage $10 - $15.

Nite, do you have any idea how much the lawyer's fees might be? If we have an estimated number, then we'd know how much we'd need to raise and it can even act as a motivation fundraising tool.

I have a couple of friends in the UK (I'm in France) that are huge Star Trek fans and it would make it easier if they have a PO Box that they can send their donations to. I know... I know it's risky to send $$ in the post, but we do it all the time (quilters who swap with each other all over the world send in $$$ for return postage with their quilt blocks to the hostesses) I just think that if Nite has a PO Box addy (assuming of course that he wouldn't want to use his home addy), we can spread the word around better. People can send in their donations (e.g. US cheques made out to Nite) directly.

I probably stepped on some people's feet with my post but frankly my dears, I don't give a damn. I'm irrelevant. Nite is what matters here and now.

Is there a pace to buy Niteshdw t-shirts? I'd happily buy a couple if they were cool... if there are none yet, I work with some artist, I can have them make up some samples for the community to check out if you want :)

I thought this might help... This is from The Pirate Bay's infamous legal page. Most of it is just the (swedish) admin making fun of the people that want to sue him, but check out the highlighted information near the bottom.

I have a feeling that (check all that apply)

You are repeating yourself

You are using a stupid form letter

You didn't get my advice about writing in red, underlined and ALL CAPS

text last time

You have no clue regarding the technical or legal points of BitTorrent

trackers

All of the above X

Why would I disable a service used by literally millions of people

because you _claim_ it infringes your rights?

Do you actually claim to own the copyright of these 160 bit hash values?

Since there is an infinite number of possible files that would produce

the same hashes, would they also violate it?

Let me quote my previous response:

"You should understand that your email and all further communication with

us will be published at http://thepiratebay.org/legal.php , and that we

will charge you for the web publishing and hosting services. Should I

send the invoice to your address above?"

So, where should I send the invoice? Our standard web publishing fee is 10E (or USD 15) per e-mail, plus

an invoicing/S&H fee of 1E per invoice.

If you decide to continue using our web publishing services, ask us about our great bulk rates!

It does bring up an interesting legal implication... after all, torrents are just 160 bit hashes, inherently not containing any copyrighted data at all... of course, that doesn't solve the tracker problem, but it does mean that the torrents themselves are legal. And with the Distributed Database Network, that means that nobody ends up violating the law...?

How the heck does the RIAA/MPAA/US courts get away with making torrent sites pay when all they manage is the hashes, and those are often tracked anonymously (correct me if I'm wrong...). They often don't even give any bandwidth for transferring file packets! If a tracker gets only the hash (i.e. has no idea what file that hash is connected to), how can they be accused of facilitating?

... to look at it from a different direction, is it illegal to possess files with number sequences and file names containing titles of copyrighted works in them?

hmmm...P.O. box would be nice.

I really don't like having to submit bank info and/or credit card info to paypal.

Plus, any money orders that came by nites way could be used at nites discretion and not for MPAA use.

There's an old joke:

Where does an 800 pound gorilla sit?

Answer: Anywhere he wants to.

Think of the em-pee-aye-aye as an 8000 pound gorilla ...
