That's what it looks like on my screen, both in IE and Opera it displays fine... Maybe a problem on your end?

Are you guys going to allow people to switch skins if they don't like the new/current one?

There should an option appearing soon to revert to the default theme...

We don't have any other notable themes. :D

Yep, you're right, now I note it too (the text gave it away after you mentioned it).

Tablet is on 1024, I'm on 1280... That's the difference...

Since TFMF is also on 1280 (I believe), wenever noticed such a thing...

I made some changes that should make it better, do a hard reload on the page and see if it's better now...

As for the theme choice, I tried making it so only the default theme could be chosen as an extra theme, it failed to work on the test forum just now, so it may not be advisable to allow theme changes, for now it could do no harm, but for some other things we have planned, it could turn out that if you pick the wrong theme, half the forum will go missing and if you don't know the right urls by heart, you cannot set it back to a fully working theme afterwards...

I don't know what is best, save members from 'chaos' or let them do it anyway...

What do you think?

I'm personally not a fan of the current theme but I would think that it would be best to wait until you guys reveal what you plan on revealing and then give people the choice of switching or not.

Out of curiousity, what exactly is it you don't like about the current theme?

(as a possible spoiler I'll add that this is not the final NiteSciFi theme, the idea was to have a light theme, but this one was faster to make in order, since less work and themes and colors is not something I'm terribly good at, neither is coding, but at least I'm better at that than theme-ing)

As for your real question.

The way things work in SMF, is you install a skin and then you install mods, however, some mods require manual edit to the skin to work, if the skin does not have the right edit, either the functionality will not display (or if you're really unlucky the entire forum will not display, but that's unlikely). We only do these edits for the default theme and the themes we're using (there are some themes installed by default SMF install that are not updated for anything). In particular there will be one theme we were planning on using for a possible wiki (should that idea be implemented) that in fact will only work while in such a wiki environment. If however we were to set it so that users can choose the themes they like, they really can choose all themes, also the ones that won't work and will get them in trouble. Now, while writing this I got an idea, but I'm not really keen on implementing it... (editing the code out so you can only choose through a specialised code selector, unless you manually and purposefully enter the right (ie. wrong) url, in which case it really would be the users own fault).

I guess I'll wait for what you guys think about it and act the way you want me to.

For now, I'm first going to try to set up some ads and a very cool donation button. :D

Actually i'm on 1400 ;)

And i will say that the current skin we're using is fully customisable so if there is anything in paticular you don't like we can fix it :)

wow... I've got to say I love the new forum, looks great!

Are you going to be installing more skins, or another possiblity might be to allow users to upload their own customized skins to use....

And are the Google Ads coming back soon?

Thanks, Crip made a nice theme that's for sure (though I did have a lot of work cleaning his code for bugs).

Installing more skins: the idea was to have 2 more skins, only one of which should be selectable and would also be the default skin (this one is a temporary theme I think)

Installing own skins: I don't think so, it would not be possible without great loss of functionality or support from the staff (for saying what code needs to be modified in the theme). If you're interested in creating a theme, we'd be absolutely thrilled to have you aboard at development.nitescifi.com.

Google Ads will return asap. Everthing is ready for installation, just a minor problem got in the way, by tomorrow I guess they'll be back.

Yep - in the near future we're hoping to allow users to change skins. I also like the idea of members being able to upload their own skins. :)

We'll have to see how that would work out but good idea.

Edit: ^^But clearly not :D

LOL, as for the changing of skins. I found a way to make it somewhat more safe for non-updated themes, it's not foolproof, but I think it'll work. Can't make the changes now though. :)

Another thing for tomorrow. :D

Don't get me wrong btw, I like the idea about users making their own themes, but I don't think it's feasible...

(I could be wrong)

Thanks Amnot :)

I'm using 1024x768 (School computer using IE6) and it does have some trouble. PNGs are still a problem on IE6 right now so we might see about converting some of the images to .jpg (that we can)

I believe Nite created a fix for PNG's on the old forum...
