Why in Star Trek (especially), and in other Sci Fi programming have the people of earth moved away from the perfect cube box for storage and opted for some bizarre dodecahedron that doesn't stack as steadily, holds less of whatever is being stored? is there a scientific reason for this huge leap backward in thinking?

Because, when the ship shakes, they needs things to fly around the room. How else can they do that without using containers that 'doesn't stack as steadily' ;D

But really, the producers just want to make things look more futuristic/alien.
