wheres your internet connection from?? Do you have to set up any proxy settings to connect to the network the internet's on? But its most probably a firewall problem, and the new browser needs to be 'allowed' to connect to the net.

yup, what vystral and hayden said, check proxy and firewall, though, from what I remember when I upgraded, my opera rules were not removed from my sys when I uninstalled it and if you simply used the upgrade button instead of a complete uninstall and reinstall of the new version, your proxy settings should not have been affected.

I don't have any better ideas though.

is this laptop using xp or vista?

both are prone to damaging video drivers which might make it do this. also, it could be a bad installation of the browser. Or, it could be a windows problem that needs a fix from the update site.
