  1. Sound system: Realtek AC’97 Audio card

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 card

there's your problem, bro. you need to go to start->run->dxdiag

go to the sound tab and set the hardware acceleration to basic.

your comp sounds very similar to mine. same problem. nvidia chipsets are not entireley compatible with the realtek ac 97 codecs. i have the same problem with San Andreas and Sim City 4.

i have run dxdiag and it says on all the tabs at the bottom that everything is fine but i will set the acceleration to basic and see what happens.

Did you even try that, bud? I am quite positive that's the problem.

Yes i tried it. I have changed my sound acceleration to basic but the problem still occurs.

  2. no there weren't any artifacts. the game just froze for about 1 second and then the pc shut down. it doesnt even come up with the blue xp screen that says 'saving settings' and 'shutting down'. the screen just goes black and switches off.

Edit: actually i just played the game again and i noticed something strange. the screen slowly turned to a white colour. its hard to describe but white blobs appeared and eventually took up the whole screen. it only lasted a few seconds though.

It'd be pretty hard to blame THAT on your processor. Are you particularly interested in actually narrowing it down to see what the problem is?

what do you mean im i interested in narrowing it down to see what the problem is. of course i am, thats why im posting here to see what other people think it might be and if they have any ideas then ill try them out!! ive also tested and checked the temperature of my hardware using several programs and everything checks out ok.

  3. Try F.E.A.R it requires a hell of a lot of graphics i have a 6200 but which is not power hungry and i only have a 350w psu same ram and same audio card and i can play x3 fine but def not on max though to laggy' date=' i'd say card is overheating, before crash have you noticed any artifacts ie. (parts missing or dissapearing) going wrong ingame as thats usually a way of telling if overheating also do you have any other fans inside your case if not buy a 120mm and place on rear it'll keep everything nice and cool and cheap £5[/quote']

  4. did you read my post?

I suggested it may be the processor over heating ant a quick solution to find out if it is. Try cleaning your pc and keeping the side off before you replace your heatsink. and if your are going to buy a new heatsink for your processor then buy a artic cooling freezer 7 pro that is the best air cooling system for a p4. and it will cost around £20.26 from www.vadim.co.uk and if you stay in the usa it should be cheaper. But try cleaning your heatsink and keeping the side off you case first as that will tell you if anything is overheating.

ok thanks for the tip. i already have taken the side off my pc.

  5. well STOP Think

    P4 3 ghz

    bet it's a prescot core

they run at 90c no problem. the fx5900 is a good card only just upgraded mine it's fine for the game

use a good heat paste on your chip but not too much. then get an aeromaster heatsink and fan (about£20) to cool it and your probs should be sorted

you need a 400 watt psu tho cos the graphic card uses a lot and needs it's own feed

    ok thanks for the help

  6. I liked the paranoia episodes of Star Trek (which actually think all series, at least had one of)

The only ones i can remember is in Enterprise and in Voyager... Being alone for a long while, and the paranoia and hallucinations starting.. Actually all really mysterious episodes kinda like that, i love, but i cant remember names or all the episodes who had similar stuff.

In DS9 i really liked the episodes (it were 2 i think, maybe 3, not sure) where the Romulans and Cardassians, teamed up to destroy the Dominion, but actually got destroyed themselfs....

i cant really pick a single episode that is my favourite but i have to agree that i like episodes involving paranoia.

  7. The woman (stargate atlantis)' date=' who was first officer of the Aurora acient ship, looked quite good aswell... Can't find a decent pic though[/quote']

her name was Pascale Hutton. shes nice aswell. i looked for a pic but the only ones i could find were those of her being a wraith.

  8. I just noticed something really strange when i was trying to lower my graphics settings from within the game. I looked and saw that the graphics settings are already set to the lowest for the game. i thought i'd see what happens if i experimented with the settings. So i put the graphics settings to maximum from within the game. i know that the game is graphically demanding but i thought id try it anyway. i have run the game and it takes a bit longer to load because of the highter graphics but it doesnt seem to shut my pc down. this is strange!! :stare:

If anything i would think that this would make my graphics card work harder and cause more problems!! (thats if it is my graphics card)

    any thoughts?

Also all of my graphics and sound drivers are the latest.

  10. I used to have an fx5900, never had overheating problems myself but it was very powerhungry, download rivatuner (google it) to check your temps. Under load, the temps are allowed to rise quite high, the max temp before the core gets damaged, is about 130°C, but its best to keep them below 80°C or even 70°C. If they rise over 80, youve got a heat problem, if they don't then that is most likely not the problem.

An overheating graphics card does not in itself shut down a computer, but when an application 'becomes critically unresponsive' (for example because the graphics card has quit functioning the way it should), windows XP will do it for you, normally seen though, that would result in a reboot, but depending on settings, it could also lead to a shutdown. This XP behavious can be disabled under advanced system properties >> start up and recovery >> automatically restart.

I downloaded rivatune and checked the temperature but it didnt go higher than 60 celcius.

  11. I mentioned this briefly when i was moaning about a possible virus that i might have.

    Basically the problem is:

When im playing X3 The Reunion, the game will be fine one minute but then it will freeze for a second and then my pc will shut itself down!! This happens anywhere in the game. sometimes it happens as soon as i load a game and sometimes it will be 10 minutes into the game before it happens. I thought that it could be a virus or something but i have noticed a pattern where it only shuts itself down when i am playing the game!

    This is my pc:

Windows XP Home Edition with service pack 2

    3.0 GHz processor

    1GB memory

Sound system: Realtek AC’97 Audio card

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 card

Could it be because my graphics card is over heating/broken or something because i know that the game is very graphically demanding.

Any reasons why or any solutions to the problem would be appreciated.

  12. I've just seen this episode and personally i liked it. As most people have said already it immediately reminded me of the scarab beatles from the mummy! personally i cant see these bugs as a huge threat like the replicators. it was only because the guards dropped the stasis box and the glass cracked that the bugs were able to get out. i didnt see any of the bugs eat through metal like the replicators!

  13. i've seen several programmes on this theory that we are all in a computer simulation. At the end of the day we wont ever find out because any research into this theory would just be computer simulated research. if we are in a simulation then we cant do anything about it!

we might all be characters in someones program and maybe when someone dies in this world someone else actually presses the 'delete character' button on their pc. what a thought! :stare:
