  1. If you look back at some of my previous posts, I spent quite a bit of time looking through the posts on other BNT forums. The general solution was to simply IP ban the estonian addresses. I agree this is rather crude, but it does work. The other thing to consider doing, is to keep adding email addresses and so on to the banned list. The most important part of this method, however, is to make sure that the banned list survives from one game to the next. Having a few people with game admin access can help, though having an admin who's actually active in the game is likely to help more. Most of the "big" BNT sites host two games, a "newbie" game with open registration and a volunteer team of admin/enforcers to ensure that only newbies are allowed in; anyone else gets banned pretty quick (as well, these players can serve as tutors, showing new players the ropes until they are comfortable in the game, perhaps helping to compensate for newbie errors, and so on (RS from 0 to 1, for example, and you'll have next to no turns left to actually do anything) ). The second game is the "advanced" game, and requires registration (often pre-registration, though this isn't strictly necessary). Players would have to come here and specifically request access. This seems to deter the estees quite well. Finally, Mega and I have discussed several security updates to BNT; I'm not sure if all or some of those made it in to his version or not. There *IS* an inherent risk in about any web based (ie, doesn't require special software to play) game; it is impossible to completely contain all hacks; but it is possible to minimize the hacks available, and make it sufficiently inconvenient to exploit that they will move on to other, easier targets. As to the IGB, aside from the exploitation thereof, part of the POINT of not having an IGB is that it makes the strategy much more difficult. You can't run around with 5000 planets, you'd never be able to keep them consolidated. But you can rely on your team mates :) or other strategies. Personally, I like the game better without IGB, though it can be a great tool. I wish there was a way to do a "partial" IGB (no loans, maybe no consolidation function, but still provide a safe and easily accessible haven for your money...) m2cw
  2. so you're volunteering to fix the ship images? great! ;)
  3. Sorry we can't be as smart as you..wait...weren't you voted out early in the game? Guess you're not as smart as you think you are >:( hey being voted out doesn't make you less smart. the idiots voted me out first, after I was attacked and thus the one person guaranteed not to be a fiend. granted I would almost certainly have had the job finished on me anyway, for that very reason. Oh well, I recall having said at the time that I thought that may have cost the villagers the game.
  4. And if I give you a -ive instead? :) Geez you try to help a guy out and what does it get you??? ::) :P
  5. Hey!! I'm not a ghost! PS gather, I will post a neg Q point for every + Q point you give... ;) erm, that should be "give me"
  6. LOL Arktis, if you HAD eaten me, I would have made far more than a single meal, even for the most ravenous fiend of all. But you couldn't wait to eat me, you just had to kick me out instead. Or,, perhaps... there fiends just want you to THINK that I escaped? Maybe they came back to finish the job, and left the note, the better to cover their tracks? After all, as a potential security risk, you never know when I might have suddenly remembered something about my attacker! Alas, now you will never know. Plus, nobody will everr know the contents of the TI locker..... but, your loss. I wish I could get this damn "necklace" off that came with my house.... hmmm.... I wonder what *this* bu
  7. I'm not even in the game anymore, and I have like 6. I personally can't stand to keep that many PMs, it is too hard to track them all. BTW, I noticed I have passed queenspock in posts.... whee...I'm gaining....
  8. I have no game, I'm on drugs. I do know that the wolves are the ones who really want me dead, apparently for my insightful stats ability. Also, to any non wolf. think about it, it doesn't make sense to vote for me. If the wolves attacked me, unless they KNEW that there was going to be a failed attack, then I am the one person who can swing the odds. everyone knows that I am not a wolf in disguise. So that means that you have a better chance of voting out the wolf. But only if you put your minds to it! So I submit that the one arguing most adamaently that I should be the next victim, is in fact the real wolf. therefor, I vote for arktis. Plus, he didn't want to play this game anyway, so no real loss for him... I vote for Arktis[br]Posted on: February 12, 2007, 01:01:33 AM and on that note, I really need to go to bed. Bbiaw....
  9. Man these drugs are making my thoughts all disjointed and out of whack. Where was I, I feel I was part of an earlier conversation. Oh yeah, votes. I vote for <falls asleep again>[br]Posted on: February 12, 2007, 12:49:44 AM hey arktik whatever happened to your "count me out, I'm not playing" tirade? change you mind again? My God man, your worse than a woman! ::)
  10. It's not luck, its the "silver" in the Centrum Silver I'm taking ::)
  11. make it so it's hard to remember anything coherently. ::) I think I saw a brief flash of grey or black. But it might have been maroon. then again, it might not have been. I might have just been seeing lights. Or stars. Or something else. I thought I heard bats, if it matters. As to a vote <falls asleep again>
  12. wait, I'm drunk AND on hospital drugs? No wonder I'm so happy... arktis, methinks you should have tried to steal some of my drugs instead of my job. tourist information is pretty boring. On the other hand, it suits my personality, temperment, and I get to talk to ALL the cute girls when they come through town B) the guys, of course, think they don't need directions. But when the girlfriends come in, I am able to be so very helpful. Usually they are pretty irritated when they come in, but they feel MUCH better when I'm thro- I mean, after I give them directions. BTW, was it not just the other day that I pointed out that with Megalith running the game I was sure to be the first victim? BTW, if you would care to visit the Tourist Information office, there is a memorial there about the victims of the previous werewolf attacks. On the other hand, I guess nobody will be there to open the place up for the next few days, so it mught not do much good. As to what I saw, well. The probllem is that when you get drunk, sometish you can't remeber that well. Plus, hospital drugs.... <falls asleep>
  13. Well aren't you special. I on the other hand have only send him *2* PMs, and those were in response to PMs that he sent me first. That means my PMS must be worth more... hmm that sounds wrong, doesn't it? B)
  14. So what your saying is that I better hurry and up my post count before RS Antilles' "Spam Mupi with PM's campaign" really gets going or I may get in trouble as an "abnormal user".... I must say its not the first time I've been considered "abnormal" ;)
  15. Of course, with Mega admining the game, I will likely not survive the first round. I mean seriously, who'd be able to challenge him on it? "OH, sorry, I gave that turn to the other werewolf..." B)
  16. what's the matter, mega, you don't admire rears? Isn't there even a song about that? "I like big b.... and I can't deny..." Oh wait I guess that's a rear-admirer, not admiral. Never mind B)
  17. Hey, I just got to petty officer. Hooray for me. And most of my posts are even useful! :P
  18. the game has to have a username and password to access the database. Including the create_universe.php file. If you have read access to the php files for the game, then you can read the info right out of the file. I certainly hope the nite used a dedicated user for the bnt database. Once you have that information (PM me and I can tell you exactly which file to look in for db info), you should be able to log into phpmysqladmin using that username and password. It won't give you root database access, but it will get you in to the BNT database, where you can remove the tables (the game has to have full permissions on its own databases), and then you should be able to recreate the universe with fresh values. (and the reality is you udon't want/need root DB access, you only need to get into the bnt db)
  19. looks more than that to me. Looks like the db is hosed. The xenobes are failing becuase they can't find the right value (or, the database has wrong values, also possible). TFMF, if you have access to the BNT files, then you should also have access to the database password. Using phpmysqladmin or some such, you should be able to gain access at least to the BNT database. You can't completely delete and recreate, but you should be able to delete all tables, and then try create_universe again. BTW this WILL result in a restart. B)
  20. BTW, I don't think its fair that I, and most users, probably, would even be able to get to that level. I only have one ery short message in my box and I am at .5% used...which means I would only be able to put 200 messages. When I had 3 messages, I was showing 1.5%..and those were short messages.... B) (just have to find something to complain about...)
  21. The cron shouldn't care about the database. I'd guess that your user can't create cron jobs, so the scheduler runs when you start it, but when it tries to schedule itself, it can't actually create the recurring task. I'll take a hosting account, I may be able to figure it out. The cron job shouldn't care about the DB, unless...it is possible the cron tries to log into the db, in fact, I'd say its likely (I haven't looked at that part of the game). if it tries to do that, and something in the game settings (db_username or db_password in the scheduler, for example) it could choke. I'm really going to have to put a priority on getting a server running so I can see whats up. Also if you can look at the logs, especially the php log (try /etc/var/logs/php) might give you info about what exactly is failing.
  22. Dude, I think it's just you, I never have that problem ;)[br]Posted on: February 10, 2007, 09:50:19 AM TFMF: I am pretty sure that the reason this is happening is that the cron job needed to run the scheduler is not running. Check...will, it USED to be /etc/crontab, but that was a while ago. There might be a GUI that you can use if nite ever went with something like that.
  23. I've met you before. It's entirely possible, I have been around a while, though not so much on this forum. I don't think I remember you tho. ???[br]Posted on: February 10, 2007, 01:27:33 AM hey can we vote somewhat out before the game starts in case we have an odd number of people?
  24. hey I could use some too. And how come my score isn't advancing? And I STILL don't have any new turns since the start of the game... ;)
  25. that's OK we don't want you playing anyway ::)
