What would be the best new idea for new Star Trek Series?

Why doesn't Enterprise begin incorporating new technology into their ship. Perhaps actual energy shields or other "new" technology seen in TOS. Getting shields up and running and using them in battle (and actually saving their butts) would be worth several shows.
