They pull out of France and the bad press won't help apple any.

I can see it - "Apple acts to protect it's stranglehold on MP3 rights" etc etc.

I don't usually agree with a French policy, but go France this time.

Apple actually uses the MP4 wrapper with AAC encoded audio, so it's not even MP3 at all. In addition to using a format that isn't supported by any other portable music player (most support MP3 and/or WMA, and a few support OGG), Apple puts a DRM wrapper on every download, so they can only be played on an iPod.

Doesn't that sound like a monopoly to you? They control everything from the production (of the digital recording) down to the only way to play them.

What France wants to do is give the power back to the consumer. I have an older MP3 player that doesn't support any kind of DRM at all. With iTunes, or any other download service, I can't play anything. France wants to make it legal for me to re-encode those DRM'd files to a format that I can use. They are giving consumers the right to Fair Use.

I agree. iTunes seems to be one of the only recognised legal downloading system. Having the files only being able to play on the iPod is just another way of saying 'you're screwed if you don't buy our rather expensive and generally-thought trendy merchendise to play the music you want to hear'. I think this is great news for France. This will probably lead to a new type of legal music downloading service which can be used for all formats. Seeing as no-one will be using the iTunes format if these news legislations go through with our government, I wouldn't be surprised if apple left here altogether - why buy an iPod when you have to go through all the trouble converting the file again?

I will give kudos to the French. The past year they have shown that they actualy have some balls. I mean threating to nuke terrorist nations, taking American bussnies empires to court... they are "A OK" with me now.

Just when did they threaten to "nuke terrorist nations" again?

And just which nations are wholly composed of terrorists?

you dont remember that giant thread about it? Jac Chirac threatened to nuke terrorist nations that where agressive towards france. But that is off topic.

Hmm, totally missed that.

To be honest, it's pretty hilarious they are doing this because while they're trying to pass this - people are striking at economic reforms that might allow people to *gasp* be fired! Frakking socialists.

Tell me about it. Life's being pretty crazy over here at the moment. For the last two days we've been off school because all around France there have been protests and strikes (as usual) about this new law, which allows trainee employees a kind of 'test period' to have a minimum of two years to prove to their boss that they're not bad at their job compared to the two months you get at the moment. So basically, if you're rubbish at your job after two years, you're fired and you have to spend a while looking for a new job in a similar area of experitise, where your new employer will ask you why you got chucked out from your old job.

But it's a good excuse to have a strike ;-) . Our school has been blockaded for the last few days. Students have put those huge recycling containers for bottles and such infront of the teachers' car park entrances, and blooked all other entrances with wire mesh, furniture, and basicallly anything strong enough they can find. Some guys even put silicon in the locks of the front doors. But hey, this is France!
