Have you heard the term, "Two wrongs don't make a right"? Just because Margaret Wente says something doesn't mean that everyone does. I'm not personally a big fan of her writing, and that she'd stoop to such labelling makes me even less a fan.

 

As for the front page article... was it a quote from a report or just paraphrasing? If it is, all it says is the person who was an eyewitness was racist. On the other hand, if the majority of people in an area are of one skin type, having another skin type is a useful qualitative observation. Also, if most of the reader demographic is white skinned, the article writers would probably assume that without other prompting the readers would imagine all people involved as having white skin, thus the description, 'brown skinned'.

 

Yeah, sometimes the Globe and Mail makes some screw-ups that really shows a lot about the writers who write for it. The 'brown skinned' descriptor really doesn't say enough about the people to have any real usefulness, and only serves to show the writer's bias and generally annoy people.

 

Then again, this is a paper that characterised Final Fantasy as a 'violent game', so when it comes to qualitative analysis, I'd take their writing with a grain of salt.

Ummm... right. I don't personally look at the credits for names, and check out what religions those people follow. Also, most TV shows have a christian bent in their morality, if nothing else. Less 'Ten Commandments' and more 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' and all that... although 'eye for an eye' is well represented too, last I checked.

 

You know... it could be that when the individual people who make some of these shows were looking for actors, they pulled on people they knew... and the people they knew lived in their particular communities. Often, communities are built from people with similar backgrounds... and the one in that area.

 

As a side note, Gene Roddenberry was a Baptist who became a Humanist later on in life. As for the other cast members... I don't suppose you could supply a nice list of the cast members and their respective religions to support your claim?
