North Korea can barely feed its people it's so cash stretched to stick together some primitive A-bombs.

They should really just say "Don't frak with us China" because realistically, China - and maybe to a lesser extent India - are the only people who will be able to do anything big in space and quite frankly, for a variety of reasons China is the bigger threat and the USA presumably doesn't like the idea of the Chinese messing around in space.

US claims that China has used lasers to attack satellites

China has used high-energy lasers to interfere with US satellites, according to a US Army space-warfare specialist. Tests have been reported previously but it is now confirmed that the laser attacks were at least partially effective.

Command Sergeant Major David Lady of the Joint Functional Combat Command for Integrated Missile Defense, said at the Strategic Space & Defense conference in Omaha on 12 October that the attacks were detected after US satellite operators - most likely users of the National Reconnaissance Office's secret imaging satellites - observed that the satellites occasionally failed to perform over China.

"There had been times when we wondered at the sudden decline in effectiveness as the satellites passed over China," CSM Lady said. Sensors at the Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein atoll in the South Pacific were tasked with tracking the satellites and observing any unusual phenomena. "We sensed the projection of beams against the spacecraft and could identify the streams of photons," CSM Lady said.

The Kwajalein data confirmed that the Chinese appeared to have "some level of confidence" in their laser countermeasures system, according to CSM Lady.

Strikes me more as a way for the US military industrial complex to justify an excess of spending in space - which is clearly the next area that they want total dominance in.

I can understand their reasoning, last night I was outside and what did I see in space? OSAMA BIN LADEN. Yup, he's in some type of Moonraker spacestation. Clearly, there needs to be massive expenditure to stop these space arabs.

People talk about that vile undemocratic regime that shuns civil liberties, makes excessive use of the death sentence, constantly vetoes or ignores UN mandates and then I say, yeah - and you thought China was bad. *badum chh*

Onesided retoric bull from the world's leading retoric bull manufacturers.

'Observing' without consent is still 'spying'. It's a matter of perspective who's 'attacking' and who's 'defending'.

Yes, the article is quite partial. The Chinese are simply defending their sovereignty. Just to clarify, the "cool news" I referred to was the fact that China has the ability to interfere with US spy satellites using high-energy lasers, not Big Brother's usual bull. Other than that, it'd be interesting if other countries developed similar countermeasures to keep the US in the dark.
