I'm looking for a browser that will allow me to bypass an intercepting proxy on my university internet. i've tried anonymous browsing websites but they are all blocked, would an anonymous explorer stored on my usb work any better.

Was it just my imagination or did Opera have a web browser that let you use it without installing the web browser?

I'm not sure if that would help in any way - i have no idea how university/school blocking software works. Probably just like a firewall - in which case you'll need some kind of proxy. Although i have never used any of those.

Sorry i can't be of more help, i'm sure others will offer much more detail than i can :)

Have you tried to using an external proxy?

No proxy (direct connection):

You <---> Uni IP filter <-|filter blocks|-> Blocked IP

External proxy (indirect connection, you're not connected to a blocked IP, the external proxy is):

You <---> Uni IP filter <-|filter doesn't block|-> Unblocked external proxy <-|no filter|-> Blocked IP

They still might be able to block you (by blocking your proxy's IP).

i presume that when hayden says anonymous browsing websites he is referring to external proxy sites. my guess the server is blocking http packets would need to know what can be done by the server before making this assumption tho. if the uni browser allows only certain uni related sites then the uni server is blocking all traffic except that which it specifically allows.

I that case it would be difficult to circumvent the blocking. :(

Is the Uni Internet connection free?

what no one has mentioned yet is if they are blocking things on purpose, they will be monitoring it to make sure no one tries funny stuff. it might only be a log of ports being accessed or something but they will watch for users doing things outside university code.  :o oops, suddenly you have NO internet access at all.

If you think of all the users in a uni using a computer - i don't think the logs are looked at that often, and probably only when there is a problem.

The easiest way to do this is simply to block any http access to all sites except the ones included in a list, usually when such a system is in place (and a lot of businesses use this nowadays) theres a link to the it department so if you need to use a site they can add it to the list of accepts (after visiting it first to validate its appropriateness).

The reason why this form of aggressive blocking has been employed is that it is now the responsibility of the computer owner to ensure no illegal activities (torrents porn etc) are being carried out on there property.

In reality however the IT depatment have unlimited access and download said illegal things onto property that they do not own on a regular basis, if you want access befriend someone in the IT department lol
