Sci-Fi Emmy Nominations

Save "Heroes," save the Emmys.

 

Not sure if that makes much sense to anyone, but "Heroes" has a lot to celebrate Thursday after learning the NBC series picked up eight nominations, including nods for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor.

 

Many of the nominations were not a surprise, as it will face off with strong programs such as ABC's "Boston Legal" and "Grey's Anatomy" as well as Fox's "House" and HBO's "The Sopranos" in the best drama department, with "The Sopranos" heavily favored after ending a long run.

 

Masi Oka was the only member of the "Heroes" cast to get nominated for his role as Hiro Nakamura. He also will face a tough field in the Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series going up against two-time winner and former Capt. Kirk William Shatner in "Boston Legal," T.R. Knight from "Grey's Anatomy," Michael Imperioli from "The Sopranos," and two eye-opening nominations for ABC's "Lost": Terry O'Quinn, who plays John Locke, and Michael Emerson, who plays Ben.

 

"Lost" did not get a nod for Outstanding Drama Series, which it won two years ago, but it did pick up six total nominations including one for Jack Bender for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof in a Drama Series, both for "Through the Looking Glass."

 

The competition for "Lost" in those two categories may be just as unexpected as "Battlestar Galactica" is starting to get its due. The SciFi Channel series is up for both writing and directing categories as Felix Alcala earned a directing nomination for "Exodus, Part 2" and showrunner and executive producer Ronald D. Moore earned a chance for a trophy for his writing work on "Occupation/Precipice."

 

As far as writing is concerned, "Lost" and "Battlestar Galactica" have competition from just a single series, "The Sopranos," which had three episodes nominated. "Heroes" is among the series also up for Outstanding Directing thanks to David Semel and his work on "Genesis," the show's pilot. "Heroes," "Lost" and "Battlestar Galactica" will compete with "Boston Legal," NBC's "Friday Night Lights" and "Studio 60," and, of course, "The Sopranos."

 

Most of the other nominations were in technical categories, with "Battlestar Galactica" earning nods for Oustanding Sound Editing for a Series and Outstanding Visual Effects for a Series, both for "Exodus, Part 2."

 

"Lost" is up for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series for "Through the Looking Glass," and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series for "A Tale of Two Cities."

 

Other "Heroes" nominations were for Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series, Oustanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series, and Oustanding Stunt Coordination, all for "Genesis," while the episode "Five Years Later ..." earned an Outstanding Visual Effects for a Series nod.

 

Among the other shows worth mentioning, Showtime's "Dexter" earned three nominations including Outstanding Main Title Design, Outstanding Original Main Theme Music and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series.

 

The SciFi Channel miniseries "The Lost Room" earned a chance to win Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Miniseries or a Movie for "The Key and the Clock."

 

"Smallville" on The CW got itself up on the board for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series for "Zod," while SciFi Channel's "Eureka" rounded out the genre nominees for Outstanding Visual Effects for a Series for its pilot.

 

The Emmys, which are handed out each year by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, will give out technical awards Sept. 8, and then hand out main awards Sept. 16 at 8 p.m., and televised on Fox.

Looks like Heroes is going to pick up one or two, but I'm holding my thumbs up for Battlestar Galactica. :)

If any scifi shows pick up an Emmy, it could give a much needed shot in the arm to our beloved genre.

It does seem the Fall season has several new series that might be interesting. or NOT.

 

New Amsterdam - Immortal guy (being a cop, he vaguely reminds me of Forever Knight)

Bionic Woman - remake/re-imagined whatever (woman massively injured, survives with bionic parts)

Journeyman - time traveler (ads don't explain the trips: method or location)

If any show has earned an Emmy it's Battlestar, but I fear the worst that Lost will receive the sci-fi "token" award for something obscure, while Heroes will get one for SFX or something sciffy related.

I have to agree with you there Hilander, nomination for "Exodus, Part 2" would be well deserved as I remember seeing when Adama jumps into the atmosphere of new caprica and thinking "Woooo Adama's got balls of steal" also not forgetting the very memorable eposide with the Pegaus ram raiding a couple of base stars!!
