TFMF
In a previous topic, I said how my laptop had died. I was able to salvage the hard drive, and by using an external drive, I was able to access all of the data. Problem On my laptop, my main username account was password protected. As a result, I can't access any of the data stored in that account. What can I do to access this data?

Amnot Borg
Is it the c:\documents and settings\youraccount folder that you can't access? Double clicking on the folder simply gives you an "access denied" prompt? These might help. Depends if you had encryption as well as password. How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP How to back up the recovery agent Encrypting File System (EFS) private key in Windows Server 2003, in Windows 2000, and in Windows XP
msg4real
TFMF I think you can’t access your data a) Because you are not on administrator on the PC you are on to access your files or b) you had made your files private or c) Both a and b ONE way to rectify the problem is to use a 2.5 IDE (laptop) to 3.5 IDE (desktop) converter and make that hdd the master and the hdd you are doing to copy the data to as slave / secondary master/slave. Boot it to your xp install on your laptop’s hdd and you might get an error stating your hardware has changed you have 3 days to re activate windows. And copy your files. If you don’t know where your hdd is on your laptop post the name model and I will look it up for you and tell you how to get it out

Amnot Borg
Mods???? We have a spammer in the serious pc threads.... and it isn't her job. >:D :) msg4real is right in that you don't have admin rights to the folders in the old drive. your functional admin/user is not the "owner" of those folders/files. you have to make your user the new owner of them. It can take awhile.
TetsuoShima
If you didn't encrypt your data, then there's nothing preventing you from accessing the data, the only thing that could be causing it, is what allready has been mentioned, the folders in question are not set up to allow you access, if you have admin rights on the computer you're accessing them from now, you can easily alter that. If they are encrypted, you'll need some prog to recover or decrypt (brute force or with given pass, not sure how windows encrypts their stuff, if it takes into account the computer it's on, the pass alone won't do it). I don't see why you would be using default windows encryption though, there are so many other free open source initiatives that are far better and won't give you headaches (unless you forget your pass :D ). Amnot Borg
yeah, ownership, password or encryption on his folders is the only thing that should be keeping him out. I always keep my good stuff in separate folders on different partitions so I can access it whenever/however I like. Thank you! :D I now have permission over all of the files. + q'ness to j00! what else are geeks for? glad things worked out.
