  1. Dang tadair, you said a mouthful. Thanks for the great history lesson!
  2. Damn straight! And until we get to Mars, I'm not going to worry about getting to another solar system.
  3. And he did it under whatever time frame Kirk gave him! "Gonna take two weeks Captain. You got 35 minutes Mr. Scott. I'll see what I can do sir....*grumble grumble*"
  4. If we're going to Mars, I'm pretty sure we're not going in a shuttle. B)
  5. I'm all for that, but you know he'd demand an internet connection while he was up there. And with the kind of spare time he'd have up there, he'd make Fleet Admiral in about another week! B)
  6. I would really hope that they already know that. If not, then we're really in trouble.
  7. I couldn't have said it better myself Skippy!
  8. I think that it's possible for someone to have made it there and back, but I don't really know the long terms problems about life in zero-G. I guess I don't really see the point of a short trip. If we can go and establish a colony of some type like you mentioned at the beginning of this thread I'm all for it. But I do think that a few more unknowns have to be answered. The zero-G / low-G long term effects most importantly. On that topic though, we could have been doing experements to find out these answers shortly after '63. Why we've been dragging our feet I have no idea (and choose not to speculate).
  9. If you do Skippy, I sure pity you the next time you feel the need for a "movement". :cyclops:
  10. Sure would blow the doors off todays Ion engines eh?
  11. Pretty much. Methane is a major end product of anaerobic fermentation (bacterial decomposition of plant and animal matter).
  12. The Mars Gravity Biosatellite Program is the first ever mission to study the effects of Martian gravity on mammals, a key step in the human exploration of space. Read more ---> http://www.marsgravity.org/program/overview.php Would you trade places with the mice in this experiment for a chance to go into space?

    Where is...?

There's a Thanatos1969 in the forum on EliteTorrents. I was curious if it might be the same person.
  14. I'll agree with you that they have not put a man on Mars. But I sure think that they have improved the chances of man making it to, and surviving on Mars. After all, what good will it do us to launch a corpse to a differant planet? B)
  15. Johnson Space Center has been leading the development of a high-power, electrothermal plasma rocket  the variable-specific-impulse magnetoplasma rocket (VASIMR)  that is capable of exhaust modulation at constant power. An electrodeless design enables the rocket to operate at power densities much greater than those of more conventional magnetoplasma or ion engines. An aspect of the engine design that affords a capability to achieve both high and variable specific impulse (Isp) places the VASIMR far ahead of anything available today. Inasmuch as this rocket can utilize hydrogen as its propellant, it can be operated at relatively low cost. Want to read more about this? http://www.nasatech.com/Briefs/Sep01/MSC23041.html
  16. Thanks for the explanation Von. I should have guessed that... But, you don't think that the Microprocessor, the Cray Supercomputer, the superconductor, synthetic skin, the WWW or the gas powered fuel cell have brought us any closer to Real Life Star Trek? Hell, if you discount everything from '63 on, there IS no Star Trek! I'm playing devils advocate here; I know what he means is that we were able to go into space then, and we haven't progressed very far since then. However, without the "support" technology that we have been working on since then, there wasn't a lot of point in further exploration. If you disagree with me feel free to call me up long distance and then send transcripts to everyone else interested on this board by snail mail. Cause that's what we'd have to do without personal computers and the WWW. BTW, that article is at least 5 years old. Do you know when the actual date is for it? I couldn't come across it.
  17. That's a pretty sweet avatar there Skippy!
  18. RL ST? I'm missing something...ReLocate...StarTrek? Please define.
  19. "The technological innovations from 1963 to the present are insignificant" - Robert Zubrin These are just the biggies... 1969 - The Artificial Heart 1971 - The LCD, the Microprocessor, and the VCR 1973 - Gene Splicing was invented 1977 - Magnetic Resonance Imaging 1979 - Cell Phones and the Cray Supercomputer 1980 - Hepetitis-B Vaccine 1981 - IBM PC and the scanning tunneling microscope 1982 - Human growth hormone 1986 - The superconductor and synthetic skin 1988 - Dopplar Radar and the first gentically engineered animal 1990 - The WWW 1997 - The gas powered fuel cell 2001 - Artificial Liver And those are just the big ones...things the we probably deal with on a daily basis. Well Robert Zubrin, I don't know what makes your list of technological achievements, but you just lost credibility with me. And none of this even touches much on the advances in cracking the human genome.
  20. "Mr. Spock, the women on your planet are logical. That's the only planet in the galaxy that can make that claim." Congratulations on your promotion Captain maverick!
  21. I agree with Hendo, black or a dark blue would be great. Or even just a simple border around the quote with the background being the same as everything else.
  22. There are both kinds Von. The link here is for a fanless model, but I've seen several with fans. http://a1electronics1.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=2885019 Either way, 1 fan on the radiator is better than 2+ in the case, and a monster on the cpu.
  23. Lt. Commander karimw786, thank you very much! And I'll yell a BIG second to Von's last statement about the "blinding white" background! One of the things I love about this site is the dark tones. Very easy on my failing eyes. But that white background is a bit much! Just a little border around the quote would be plenty IMO!
  24. Actually liquid cooling is the way to go in top notch systems. I don't really have any cooling problems on mine, but the thing I like about liquid cooling is the silence! No fans humming along whatsoever!
