Myth, TDA, LND, Goodfellaz, Hoodlum, Vengeance, Centropy, Wasted Time, Paranoid, Corrupt, Gamerz, AdmitONE, Hellbound, KGS, BBX, KHG, NOX, NFR, CDZ, TUN and BHP.

This is an major loss......

Centropy Hoodlum Vengeance and Myth are big ones. Vengeance released an great half life 2 rip this year..

But then again these are only a few scene releasers, this will not have much of an effect on bittorrent.

god....

are the FBI thick or something?

they shut down the trackers, oh big whoop.

Az has basically started to counteract that with DHT.

They think there gunna scare people. Wrong again

i know what im doing is legal for me currently. Because afiak british law allows 200gig or 2000 files. Before you are concidered breaking the law. And its well past that before they do anything about it.

TBH, they more they shut down, the more resolved it makes me about P2P.

Just my opinion.

It does say they "targeted" but doesn't actually say what they managed to take down, we'll have to wait a few days to see what they really managed to do. They'll probably release a statement claiming a major victory in the coming days......

"The investigations targeted “release groups†that are the original sources of pirated works that can be distributed worldwide in hours."

This paragraph says it all

"FBI agents and investigators in the other nations conducted 90 searches starting Wednesday, arresting four people, seizing hundreds of computers and shutting down at least eight major online distribution servers for pirated works."

8 servers?? that's it!!, not much of a victory if you ask me.

Guess nobody told the FBI there's 1000's of servers out there distributing copyrighted material.

Looks like the FBI is doing a continuation of the Elite shutdown

Just to advise any of you former Elite members the forums are alive & kicking

This is what my tax money is going towards? Wow, I feel so much safer knowing that the FBI has arrested a Star Wars pirate. ;)

Damn man, I was talking to a few friends that I used to 'run with' that are now "a group that will remain nameless in public" that is just as popular as myth, if not more instantally recognizable, when it comes to the game scene just the other day. He mentioned that 'something wasn't right' with the logs, and 'funny people' comming around lately, and they kinda shut down shop, and are in the process of retooling their security and all that.

This is bad Effing news, everyone :( But, on the bright side, there ARE still a lot of people out there that know the 'trade' and are willing to step up still.

Some of you may be mis-understanding what happened. This was NOT a BitTorrent hit. If you know the Warez scene, they distribute via protected FTP/IRC servers and allow that data to get leaked out to other P2P networks. The news I've read says the following:

1) The FBI set up FTP dump sites and 'earned the trust' of distribution groups to use them

2) The FBI allowed the distribution groups to dump about 13 TB of data, including movies and applications, to the FTP site

3) The agent that was 'pretending' to be the dump site operator collected the names (screenames/handles) of people using the FTP site

4) The FBI arrested the individuals responsible for adding content to the dump site for distribution

SO: This has absolutely nothing to do with BitTorrent, per se. They simply tried to bust the distribution groups that pride themselves on getting out applications/movies before other groups. With that said, it doesn't really matter because new groups will form and other groups will appear. It's just too bad for the guys that got caught.

yeah i read it the same as you nite, but shame they got busted. Surely the FBI setting up there own server is classed as "entrapment"?

Yes, but it won't be. Wasn't it Bush who said something like "welcome to the New World Order."? We are becoming like the Borg.

Very true Nite, but there's also direct relationships with several BT sites & many of the waraz groups. Some of Elite admins & members had direct ties with the warez scene & there are several other BT sites with same setup.

This will have a direct affect on BT, but only to the extent that it's now going to take a few extra days for new materials to hit the BT scene.

  • 2 weeks later...

People, the authorities run after Star Wars pirates because it is so easy. They prefer that than actually going out and protecting the ordinary citizen. Military Police are infamous for their lack of professionalism. They are the policemen who you see sitting in cars doing absolutely nothing. So much for law and order.

*Will probably get flamed*

If they're so worried about Piracy, why didn't they take care of Microsoft? Since it's the biggest company in the world, and one that sticks out the most, you'd thought they'd of done something for their past crimes (Or is there some kind of timelimit on the crimes?).

I mean, SP1a for WindowsXP hasn't been out for that long, and they'd only just sorted out the issue of Microsoft pirating the Java language in the courts by that time. (Is talking about Sun microsystems Java vs Microsoft Virtual Java Machine)

Edit:

Of course now Microsoft can afford to buy the companies out and use their ideas. But years and years back, they couldn't. They would simply pirate the ideas, and the pirated things are still in circulation and being used today. The GUI OS concept, the graphical Internet Browser, and who knows how many more.
