So, that line of ships was totally nameless until the Defiant made Starfleet think, "Oh, why don't we give this strangely unnamed line of ships the name of this one member of that line?" ^^'

... it was probably a simultaneous thing. Was the Defiant supposed to be the first of the Defiant line or something? heh... that's probably a question only 1) the writers, and 2) uber-Trek fans would know ^^'

So they named the USS Defiant after the Defiant-class starships?

Actually, I believe it was the other way around...

In the first episode that we see the Defiant - Sisko says - "Officialy it's an Escort Class Ship" or somthing like that - The game Star Trek Dominion Wars says its an Escort class ship too. Although I think Defiant Class is better

I doubt it. The Defiant class starship project was initially headed up by Sisko, in his years between Wolf 359 and commanding DS9. Along with a bunch of engineers, he was looking for a new kind of ship as a defense against the Borg. When the Borg threat died down a little, and the new Dominion threat arose, the Defiant found itself in use by the Starfleet crew aboard DS9. It is true that the Defiant was the first in its class, and the line was stopped after the Defiant, due to all the test results surroundinfg the Defiant saying it was 'too agressive'. But, after the threat of the Dominion became more apparent, and war became more and more likely, Starfleet put the Defiant class ship into production again, giving the DS9 crew custody of the new Defiant class ship 'USS Sao Polo', renamed 'Defiant', probably just to make Sisko happy. In the penultimate episode of DS9, when the crew recieve the ship, Dax says 'I didn't know we were going to be getting another Defiant class'. The cloaking device of the Defiant was never meant to be intergrated into the class originally, but as has been staed before, it was only allowed to be used in the Gamma Quadrant. Any supsequent usage during wartime was a direct violation of the Romulan agreement, and is pointed out in one episode where Bashir says something to the effect of 'Didn't the Romulans say that we could only use the cloak in the Gamma Quandrant?', with Sisko replying 'I wont tell if you don't'.

I hope this clears a few things up for some people.

macro is right.

I think also that apart of the agreement to allow the federation to have the cloak was in the understanding that they shared any intel about the founders and if i remember sisko states that the ship was to powerful for the size of ship and nearly shook its self apart, remember that as kira wasnt to pleased.

You should take a week off and watch DS9 continuously from start-to-finish. Like a novel, it makes the most sense when viewed all at once.

.

I think the specific episode is the season 3 premiere, which explains that Defiant was a "failed prototype" - one of a kind - and that the reason a Romulan is on the bridge is because they want to learn more about the Dominion - and lending a cloak to the Fed helps them achieve that goal.

Originally the cloak was only meant to be used if the Romulan was there, but they later dropped that idea when the war broke out, and winning the war was more important than keeping the Roms happy.

The Romulan was only there for the first 2 episodes

Actually the first defient was the, U.S.S Defient; constitution class: NCC-1764. It just disappered though near Tholian terrorty though...

the defient that I am talking about though Is, U.S.S. Defient; NX-74205. It was a prototype for the for the proposed "Defient Class". It was orginaly designed for use aginst the Borg. But i didn't remember why it can cloke...

I'd figure that a new one would pop up to fill in the gap...

Frankly, if the borg is a collective, why would they have a central figure like the Borg Queen in the first place? I think that was a serious slip-up on the part of the writers, myself... why stress the redundant collective, and then neuter the whole thing with a central Queen figure?

The only reason they made a central figurehead originally (i.e. Locutus) was to give a human face to the borg for dealing with humanity and extract Federation info and tactics from him... unless I misinterpreted it somewhere.

I like to think that the borg queen is like a Torrent Tracker. She directs the drones to each other and orders their communications. I think she also has some control because she can decide what is transferred by promoting ideas. This is similiar to torrents because if a tracker doesn't have a torrent, then you just aren't getting the data.
