Is this a good show?

My opinion? Both the old version and the new are excellent. Remember, when BSG first aired, the airwaves were dominated by the FCC. So for the times, it was a good show, and still has showing ability now.

But back then, between the FCC frakking things up, special effects not being what they are now, and other factors, this show just wouldn't make it on today's airwaves as a new show.

The new one, while not the adventures of Starbuck and Apollo, is, IMHO, a realistic look into how a modern society would react to suddenly being homeless en masse, searching for a new home. With the exception of the very first show, the old BSG never paid any attention to the plight of the average citizen trying to survive.

Does that mean we have to see some human interaction, and even "adult" content? Yes. Note that in all of Star Trek, not once was there mention of going to the bathroom. But, In the remake of Battlestar Galactica, you see that men and women do not segregate bathroom facilities, but use a common one.

So, I feel both are good, for their own reasons.

why do you feel we must see the adult content??? ^^^^

i admit going to the bath room isn't reall adult, you don't see them going for a poop, :)

but some of the other adult content borderlines soft porn?? do we really need to see this, i'm not complaining but it would have been nice if it was a bit less, than it could be plausable to watch it without free of getting caught at some doggy scene!! :)

Using same facilities? Yeah that makes fascinating viewing. Maybe they should have a toilet cam, then hopefully they'll accidentally flush the whole show (if they can find it :( ) down it.

The sex is completely worthless and pointless (pornstar galactica). Like others have noted, it's very soap opera and it takes them 3 eps to do half of what the original did in 1 ep. There's no smart humour in it whatsoever either. The new 'cylons' are a B movie budget cop-out in the extreme (and has been done to death), which they could've done in the 70's and saved truckloads on costs. As for the cancer sub plot (if you can call it that), it just fully demonstrates the zero level of imagination the script writers have. It's sci-fi, they can create any new illness they like, but no, cancer is what they come up with! Even Stargate SG1 suffered from using this when the creativity door is open to anything they like.

I wasn't expecting a remake of the original at all. I was expecting a new show. Instead we have a mis-matched rehash that has all the mystery and fun taken out to be replaced with pornosoap. I normally don't post things like this but I was so looking foward to a series with cold, calculating (ergo evil) robots in it, instead of emotional humanoid/bio/non-coporial entities that dominate in other contemporary scifi shows, so I'm extremely disappointed to see the dross they've turned a great licence into. The only good thing it has going for it is the dark nature similar to Aliens or Predator but it lacks any of the suspense or mystery of those.

I agree with all those who have posted their dislike here and in the New vs. Old poll thread. Love the ADD comment! Made me :D ! Glad someone else noticed. I find this show makes me come down with a bad case of BsG Tourets, cos it's frackin pants!

Anyone know of a modern scifi show that has robots in it?

it seems theaveng is in the minority here ;) So far if you comapre 1st & 2nd season of any st series with bsq bsw will hands down' date=', i wonder if they can keep it up though????[/quote']

True. I *did* say season 2 was an improvement over season 1's drek. So the show is improving and that's good!

BUT, looking at just the first 1.5 years of each show, I still think the X-Files, DS9, SG1, SGA, Babylon 5, ..... all of these still outshine the new Galactica. I haven't even bothered to download the new episode 211 aka Pegasus Part 2. I simply don't care.

Especially since it's not true porn. I still don't get to see the sexy Asian girl's or cute Cally's oh-so-soft breasts. So it's just a lot of pointless teasing, and no reward. (Same applies to Enterprise's pointless shower scenes.) I either want to see it all, full nudity, or nothing... leave out the teasing.

I'd rather have story & dialogue.

Well, just the response to this concept of bathroom facilities is a reason why this is a big concept. People are raised to think that men and women need seperate facilities for public bathrooms. Just the fact that the people in BSG don't see the need for this highlights how their society thinks.

Am I saying that the adult content is mandatory? No. But, if one looks past the "adult" connotations, you see it actually makes a comment on their society.

I actually found it interesting that even as advanced as they are, they still fight the same diseases we do, such as cancer. Because of this, I find the show extremely interesting.

I feel it is an excellent show. Would I say it is the best one ever? Nope. Babylon 5 has that position in my book, having a 5 year storyline that stayed the course. But it is one frak of a good show.

Hey Everyone

This is my first post on these boards and I have a view on BSG .....it is all frackin brilliant new and old series.....I think the main reason I like it is because It is a great thought that there is a civilisation out there looking for security and somewhere to live away from the evil cylons....and it is this little third rock from the Sun that we call home!

I really hope the series goes on and on and also hope there will be more feature length additions etc

Only my view

  • 4 weeks later...

I managed to d/l the full season 1 before the happenings of late. *phew* A friend has been d/l season 2 but i refused to watch anything of it half way through. Never seen anything of BSG and reading through all the posts for this topic and looks like i'm going to be enjoying myself.

Kewl Galactic Runner Beans.

Let you'll know how it goes.

Is Battlestar Galactica a good show to watch?

No not really. It's boring. The first season I watched once, and have absolutely NO desire to watch it again. Too much Soap Opera nonsense (They should rename it "Days of Our Cylons" or "As the Galactica Turns").

The second season has improved with more emphasis on exploration, but it's still not up to the level of far superior shows like the X-Files Alien Mythology, Deep Space Nine's Bajor/Cardassian/Dominion Arc, or Babylon 5's Shadow War/Birth of the Alliance videonovel.

(shrug) If you see the New Galactica DVDs for $15 used, go ahead and buy them. It's worth watching once, but otherwise largely forgettable.

I agree. BSG reminds me of the Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital. Too much drama.

I personally think it's fantastic, best thing I've seen in years.

But it's not just me. There must be a reason why the AFI named it one of the 10 most outstanding shows of last year and why TIME magazine named it the BEST show on TV. Not just the best SCi-Fi, but the best - period!!!

That's ridiculous. It'll never be the best period when you have TNG and DS9 around. The best! BAH.

You misunderstand what I mean. I didn't mean the best show ever, but the best show on TV last year. I am assuming that they only consider first run shows, so that lets out TNG & DS9 (BTW I am a huge Trek fan and I didn't say that it was best that I'd ever seen, just the best in years. DS9 will always be my fave)

The original question was "Is this a good show?" and I was just sharing that it is a critically accliamed show, whether you like it or not.

It also made another list on March 1st. It made the top ten in the 2006 Readers Awards: Best TV Show. BSG was the highest rated cable show.

Position Title

1 Lost

2 24

3 Arrested Development

4 Family Guy

5 Desperate Housewives

6 Scrubs

7 Veronica Mars

8 Grey's Anatomy

9 Battlestar Galactica

10 My Name is Earl

Well, then. If that's what you meant, then perhaps but I still don't really like BSG that much. No idea why.

These days, I need all the laughs I can get. So I find myself watching more shows like "My name is Earl" and "Scrubs" and "Family Guy" etc.

Well, I love SG: Atlantis but can't stand SG1. I too have no idea why. It's upposed to be this fantastic show that everyone raves about but it does nothing for me (the original movie was excellent though). Actually the reason I love Atlantis so much is because of the humour, which obviously BSG lacks (although 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' was hysterical), but then it wasn't designed to be. Atlantis on the hand has much humour, a lot courtesy of Rodney McKay  ,and I find it a great offset to BSG.

As an aside, DS9 was the most awesome show. Again, similiar to BSG, it had a darker feel to it, comflict amongst the characters and I loved the Defiant (I soooooooo want one, my all time fave starship). But what it had over BSG was the humour that was an integral part of the show. Actually I am now inspired to watch the whole 7 seasons right from the start.

Well remedyu, we might disagree on BSG, but love your taste in Trek B)

Well, it's the opposite with me. I love SG1 but I really don't like SGA much. I tolerate it but I don't get that excited waiting for the next episode, etc. I've tried and tried but it just doesn't do what SG1 does for me. I guess it's because of Samantha Carter and O'Neil :p It's hard to replace O'Neil. He was a very funny guy (not to mention the fact that I was a very big Mcgyver fan)

But if we're talking Star Trek, I loved em all. Even Voyager. I could watch every episode from every series over and over. Enterprise was a little tough in the beginning and I never thought Bakula suited the Captain's role but in the end it did get quite decent.

I never liked Rodney McKay, he appeared arrogant, annoying and I think I started hating him when he first appeared in SG1 with his almighty attitude. Just a series I know, but I guess it started from there.

BSG, just a little too dark and too dramatic for me unfortunately. The cyclons are hot though, no doubt about that :p #6 especially.

Hey :) been watching way to much BSG of late. But i suppose i'm lagging behind having only just started Season 1 this week. Already on episode 9 or so. I must say i've been enjoying it no end. Can not wait to see where it goes in season 2.

As for comparing BSG to SG1, i still rate it, even though O'Neil is pretty much on the back burners now. Atlantis i've gotten into more over season 2, than SG1 i'm afraid to say, but it still has its moments. Which reminds me... i still haven't seen the last episode. :|
