Weird file found in my web cache

I've never seen an .nfo file with a script in it. Most .nfo files have ascii art or info about the download or zip file it came with. I tried to find out if scripts embedded in an .nfo file would function but so far I can't find anything. Google hunts can be a real time consuming process sometimes.

If it was the only other file besides the movie, then probably it can't harm you. Being anxiety prone myself, I'd slow down on the coffee and check to see what files are downloading and shred the unknown ones.

oooh.. anything does look suspicious with the word 'microsoft' in it...

I also can't see how an .nfo could run code,

but: Just to be sure : "Set FireWall Sheilds To Maximum No.1"

..and see if you can catch any outgoing info.

On the other hand: It could just be a way of making the D/L 'look' legitimate.......

.nfo's can simply be viewed with Notepad

assuming you could put all the fancy java and html in it, Notepad isn't going to execute the code, it will just display the code in text format

As for why an anti-piracy website was mentioned there, well there are some strange things in NFO's sometimes. What's more curious is the odd java script. From the title it could just be a system info relating script that like 90% of all software packages slap into their stuff (aka spyware) but the fact it calls apon this and goes to some sort of anti-piracy thing is strange indeed.

To be safe as usual, virus scan, spyware scan, etc

That's obviously an HTML page. Why that would be included as an NFO file is strange. Still, if an anti-piracy group is released copyrighted material available for others to download, that means that they are infringing. If they were in fact given permission to distribute, then anyone that downloads it would have done so with permission. Couldn't be considered entrapment?

As an HTM page it showed nothing when opened in a browser.

Entrapment? I sure hope not.

Anyways, thanks for all the input (and I believe I will cut back on the coffee).

No one could be having a laugh expressly at my expense since this .NFO file was part of a torrent download (forget the app I was downloading) and they wouldn't have known that I was going to download it. Randomly directed at anybody - probably. Anyhow, it's deleted and I haven't had any strange men in black show up knocking at my door in the middle of the night...so, I guess it's no biggie...

hahahahhaahahhaha M$ oWnZ U. Best reformat otherwise you will be arrested lol

First THIS file WAS NOT IN THE TORRENT! You said yourself it was from the Web Cache - it just happened to have the same name. Coincidence.

omfg did you even visit the rsac.org website?? They are now the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA.org). ICRA is not a censor (and definitely not anti-piracy!!!) and makes no value judgements about any site. Web authors use the system to rate and label their own sites.

Microsoft System Information files were around long before iNFO files...

It is not a script per se, but a html web page which contains a VBScript - not unusual at all.

This file will not connect to the Internet - the rating is there just in case you set IE's Content Advisor to restrict content.

some relant links maybe?

Still I think you should format anyway fmd

"Not sure where to post this question but this seemed the best place." Umm... probably not. Surely after 2600 posts you would know where a relevant place would be?? Here's a hint: "Computing & Electronics - Discuss any kind of hardware, software, or consumer electronics" - and probably not:

'Torrent Hysteria- We no longer have torrents, or a torent tracker. Please keep all threads regarding that confined to this area.'

Past history. In my experience, ordinarily .nfo files contain ascii text which doesn't harm your machine. .nfo files containing scripts are out of my personal knowledge base although I do know M$ uses them. I've never knowingly utilized the .nfo files of Microsoft. Training for MCP never showed a practical use for them. .bat, .sys were far more common and used more often for installation or maintenance purposes.

Having looked at the script a bit more it does seem that it wasnt to do with any torrent you have downloaded it is part of the PCHealth suite which comes with all windows software from windows 98 onwards

I just hope that you didnt format your hard drive as has been suggested. No files are actually sent anywhere and besides it references a file (dataspec.xml) which contains information about your hardware.

The script merely checks your current hardware against the stored hardware and updates it if it is not the same.

MOD NOTE: Let's try to watch the smart mouth and the sarcasm shall we? As a MOD on this forum that's not an idle request. I hope for your sake your first post isn't any indication of your demeanor.

No. I didn't format my hard drive. I've much more sense than that. Only an idiot would have taken that advice - if you can call it that.
