I delete most of my week old pm's every week or so and had 50 something after the werewolf game. Currently only a mere 6 pm's in the in box... (I like to keep things organized and tidy). It's funny, I tend to prune my PM's regurly, and the PM's that I have in my inbox are mostly from NiteShdw with important information that I want to keep. Stuff like IP addresses, usernames/passwords for various things on the server, porn, instructions for how to do things that I don't want to re-ask. I only have one ery short message in my box and I am at .5% used...which means I would only be able to put 200 messages. When I had 3 messages, I was showing 1.5%..and those were short messages.... PM's are there as a means to help people, they are not the main focus of a forum. So if you don't post, but only pm, you'll have to regularly delete pm's. Still the number is adequately high, so you won't get bothered by it for normal use, unless you really are just pm-ing and not posting. As soon as you reach chief petty officer, there are no restrictions anymore. For newly joined members aka recruits, the limit is 50 pm's, this number rises as you rise through the ranks. To exceed the limit, you'd have to have pm-ed on average 4 times more than you posted, that is not normal use of a forum, and certainly for junior members this kind of behaviour is discouraged.
