Knowledge of civilization was quickly being forgotten except in areas where the populations were aware of what was happening and tried to protect the children and the knowledge. Jeremiah, himself, was one of the protected children. He grew up and started exploring to see what the other people had been up to and if he could share what he knew. At least that is what I remember about it. slightly similar show... Jericho. terrorists nuclear bombed the U.S. and the survivors are struggling to save or re-create their civilization.
