x5315
i'm assuming you have another computer. Download a linux Live CD. i think Ubuntu has one, as does Slax. Boot into the CD, and then copy all your data onto another drive, or burn a DVD/CD. Then format and reinstall Windows.

msg4real
umm i'm assuming you have another computer. Download a linux Live CD. i think Ubuntu has one, as does Slax. Boot into the CD, and then copy all your data onto another drive, or burn a DVD/CD. Then format and reinstall Windows. == back up data and then re-format drive and re-install windows I would try to get in to safe mode by hitting F8 and there should a screen that has options like normal boot --~---- safe mode safe mode network support safe mode command line <----- choose that and you should see several files run and you my need to wait after about 2-3 min you should see a welcome screen or user box enter / select an admin acount and you shoulds see cmd box (the shell) and type explorer and safe mode should apper tho not the full thing you should be able then to remove the software that is cousing the issue if CHKDSK shows the there are BAD SECTORS the hard drive is failing thus you need to buy a new one and install it to it's not that hard to do [br]Posted on: April 17, 2008, 01:08:10 PMtho if you can't get into safe mode the way I sied you chould backup your data you can use linux live cds for this or bart pe ( a windows platform) will the file manger plugin on and burn the live cd to a cd if you need to know where to get them you can find the linux iso's a www.lqiso.org knoppix is a good one and bartpe can be found http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ tho you need the xp cd inorder to make the disk no codes tho

TetsuoShima
If your windows fails to boot properly, you should get an option in the F8 boot-up list: "Last known working configuration". If you select that option, it should resolve any issue you got since the previous working boot. Once you're in, you can uninstall the cr*ppy software you managed to install. :p Alternatively try the safe mode as stated above, but usually LKW works just fine, unless it's a boot sector issue or something, but if that's so, then safe mode wouldn't work either. If all else fails, you can also boot from the windows cd and revert to a previous restore point, that does require you to have that service enabled, but it's enabled by default, so if you didn't disable it yourself, that should work. Windows (starting from the 2k version) is pretty robust, a re-install is rarely necessary.
TFMF
We should give QS her own forum on here where she can post her problems. Thankfully, this problem was resolved. The miracles of Chkdsk c: /p /r.
hayden
you can try to use the install disk to repair windows... with my experience that never works 100% TELL ME ABOUT IT!! The kernall on vista just totally exploded on my brothers pc so i thought it would be a simple repair job with windows cd, how wrong i was! I dont even know why they give it as an option. Not to mention the numerous other times its happened on xp. Def a reinstall job, good to hear it was fixed! :)

TetsuoShima
You had bad sectors. O_O *Gasp* Well, in that case, the prog you had previously installed most likely was not the cause of your 'unbootability'. At least, not if it was a genuine prog and not some 'virus-like' that intentionally wrecks your hdd. Nice that it's fixed tho. :)
TFMF
Though, it probably is a sign that you should make regular back-ups of everything, QS. Even a small flash drive to back-up important essays and other documents is a good idea.

Amnot Borg
A sector is the basic unit of data storage on a hard disk. Everything software gets turned into sectors of data. Bad sectors are scrambled or damaged data. The operating system has trouble reading them and it crashes. "Calm down, child. It's just a computer. It's more frightened of us than we are of it." Amnot Borg
I'm glad things worked out okay for you. the little quote at the end is a version of what you tell small children to calm them down about scary animals. it seemed to fit the mood of fear going on.
