  1. I use a firewall that blocks any intruders, including those hourly checkups by comcast to see if I'm really online or whatever it's for. I don't do anything wrong, really..honest...I just don't like peepers in my PC anymore than I like my wife and kids putting our phone number on the internet for anyone to call our house offering to send us to Disney "for a small application fee".

Yeah, and don't anyone mention the "Do Not Call" list, that only works when you don't tell people your phone number when signing up for some free spyware, thereby giving permission for at least one phone call.

Wow, that's off topic. I never got any letters from comcast, but I'm certain they don't give a hoot until they recieve those emails. For anyone who wants to know, if the file names don't cantain the name of the entire contents, Like "Infringing FileName: [tmd]the.italian.job.(hairyhamster).dvdrip.(2of2).avi " but used "tij" instead, there would be no "Legal" way for anyone to intercept your file or look at it, much less cause too much suspicion.

Sorry Nite, wasn't trying to share tips, but common sense goes a long way, you know. Nowadays, it would be like walking through downtown telling everyone you meet "Hi, I have unpaid parking tickets!", eventually you're gonna run into a meter-maid.

  2. Well' date=' to me at least, it's clear that a 'search engine' or 'indexing site' cannot be held responsible for what it finds/indexes, if it is available on the web. If they were, google/yahoo/MSN/... and basically any other search tool out there can just close its business, since they'd all be 'criminal organisations'. By the way they conduct business and how they are organised, it is my opinion that those 'associations' are every bit as criminal in their conduct as the ones they are trying to bring down. But hey, I'm no judge, luckily for them...[/quote']

Kinda like being a classified ad for piracy, eh?

Wonder if that's like the newspaper advertising stolen goods?

  3. This is a story I got in an email from SecurityProNews Today

The Motion Picture Association of America has been sued by Valence Media, parent company of the TorrentSpy search engine, over its employment of a person to steal private information from them.

Attorneys for TorrentSpy said in the suit the MPAA paid $15,000 to an unnamed "informant" who entered their computer systems without authorization to collect information on TorrentSpy for his employer.

The action filed in US District Court for the Central District of California said an intermediary for the MPAA told the informant, "We don't care how you get it," and promised him indemnity from liability for his actions.

Those actions included obtaining an Excel spreadsheet listing TorrentSpy expenses for January through June 2005; private emails of company employees and executives; details about TorrentSpy's servers and networking; and client bills and other trade secrets.

The lawsuit also alleges an agent of the MPAA told the informant private investigators would be employed to "comb through the trash" of TorrentSpy founder Justin Bunnell and other people associated with the company.

This dispute is an offshoot of the MPAA's battle with sites like TorrentSpy, which indexes torrent files. Those torrent files act as pointers to content stored on other machines. The MPAA sees no difference between providing copyrighted content for download and pointing to where end users can find it.

That led the MPAA to sue TorrentSpy and other torrent search engines in February 2006. MPAA categorized TorrentSpy as "the world's most-visited site for obtaining infringing content using Torrent software. The site offers over 160,000 content items including 27,182 movies, 21,130 TV shows and over 45,000 music items" at that time.

Looks to me like the MPAA are trying to get evidence because they have no case or a weak case on this one, if they don't win this one you know folks are gonna go HOG WILD BABY!

  4. It has to be said that if a sentence starts "If the world was like in Star Trek..." your logic may well be flawed.

It's cool, I have a firm grip on reality, the future is gonna be much like it is today, Gene Rodenberry had a good idea, but I don't see anyone jumping on that bandwagon.

The second half of that sentence

but being in such a money driven society like ours (capitalist?) doing that is stepping on toes because money is an emotional issue.
, as jaded as it sounds, is how I see things.
  5. I can argue both sides of this, but look where we are...

If the Star Trek ideal were in place, everything would be done for everyone's betterment, entertainment even, so sharing the files would be perfectly alright, but being in such a money driven society like ours (capitalist?) doing that is stepping on toes because money is an emotional issue.

  6. Seriously' date=' Deal or No Deal is a game of pure chance. There is no skill or challenge involved. It's not entertainment to me. What gets really annoying is how long they draw out the time they take to choose a box. It takes them 3 minutes just to pick between box 3 and box 24. I get bored watching that show. [/quote']

My wife got me into this, you're right, there is no skill at all, it's a show that ANY of us could win with luck. What I like is that it gives me the excuse to sign up online for the "Lucky Case Game" which takes 3 minutes and surf through the rest of the show in peace while Howie teases my wife...Right after this...

  7. Yeah, I didn't really believe those numbers.

For me the basic assumption has always been the maths behind it was...

Number of illegal downloads x average retail value = cost of piracy.

Which is obvious rubbish. A large number of people download stuff they would never part both paying for.

But yes, corporations make up numbers pretty well and as the RIAA and MPAA are both representing corporate interests, it's not surprising if there maths figure in a little bit of... creativity.

Nothing to add, thats the first thing that cae to mind for me.

  8. I've been busy, yes, too busy for hanging out with my buds at niteshdw.com....it's an addiction, anyone who knows me from here knows I can't stop once I start, but here I am...now.

The current line of thinking in this thread seems to say positive thinking or wishing good things for the opposition will solve the problem. I can't disagree with these idea(L)s, but a friend of mine taught me that sometimes not believing in something is just as powerful, like wishful thinking without burying your head in the sand.

This is a bad example here, but he used to sweat getting pulled over all thetime and eventually got pulled over every week for 4 weeks straight, couldn't stop thinking about cops....

Finally, after alot of meditation on the subject, he decided that trafic cops didn't exist to him and blocked the idea from his mind on every occassion,. So now he no longer gets pulled over, 4 years later, until the other week when he was caught doing 130 in a 75 in New Mexico...he couldn't pass up breaking in a new Dodge Magnum.

That works fo me in some situations, but like I said, you can't bury your head in the sand, but expecting good from evil often brings the desired results.

  9. I.ve been busy awhile, but I'm back just in timw eh?

I loved Enterprise, it took a bit for me to bother with it, after all, What would Scott Bakula Offer Star Trek fans...

We, it was cool, and through it all, I prefered season 3, but the conclusion of season 4 was rushed but I don't think anyone was trying to sell some other Trek Generation, I think it was an easy way out.

  10. Networks are making money of iTunes, but they could certainly put the brakes on that and do what OnDemand does for cable on the web. That's a little off topic, but in the same strain, I could see that if a show had some kind of "Hook" to keep people coming back for more, the ondemand society (instant gratification) would be exploited further.

Psycologically speaking, this allows unsavvy/average schmoe users to participate in what they see as the hip internet. They can also participate in discussions and become more web involved/evolved this way. The people I'm speaking of don't use video editors or the like, so putting advertising, perhaps even some type of coding that includes fresh ads each time a movie or program starts (they already do this in porn each time it checks the license).

I think I would rather see things in the hands of the Networks than companies like apple.

  11. I think I can either agree or cause pain on this, but my own beliefs may contradict themselves.

First, I think thatpeoples personal privacy and similar rights should not be stepped on, like the fact that it's now legal for the gov't to spy (call it what you want) on those suspected of certain crimes, which haven't been clearly enough defined, suspected terrorists definately should be checked out, but only to the point of ruling them out or picking them up and trying/deporting them. The power they have right now is unexceptable because the officials doing the snooping can twist anything to look like suspected crime, not just terrorism.

Next, we have to make it clear, with no doubts, that we will kill you if you are supporting or participating in terrorist activities...no loopholes. Bush used to be such a cowboy, but the congress has clipped his nuts I think, when he was governer he'd have just had terrorists shot on the spot before having to house, clothe or feed them. In the absense of respect, fear will have to do - Str82u. I don't mean that peace doesn't beget peace, but when a threat appears, eliminate it before it infects others.

Finally, closing our borders isn't economic suicide, trade isn't affected by that, it just keeps people from physically entering/staying into the country illegally. Besides, trade sanctions on countries like Japan that have such discustingly huge trade deficits wouldn't break my heart. Yes, it would cost more to buy American on some things at first, but in this day and age we can produce cheaply also. And sure, we want to let in those persecuted or underprivileged, but illegal workers, piss on them.

At this moment, I think, in some way, my point is that security and deplomacy don't work together. We don't have the right to impose our sensabilities (or lack of) on others, but "Don't Tread On Me" is certainly fair.

  12. niteshdwbar.png

Here's your bar with the bevel/embossing on it. I'm not sure if anyone want this one, but I'll leave t on my site for awhile for folks to grab it (just copy and paste to your pc), please don't hotlink it as it will vanish on you in the future. I think there are enough images in sigs and you all know where my heart lies, but I do love playing with photoshop, especially when someone else does the creative part first.

  13. is that how they amde that eps of DS9 trils and tribbels? that was a great eps btw. oh and of cource the MPAA is gonna go agisnt it' date=' they want more money.[/quote']

The Star Trek eps that used other clips or "Stepped In" compensated the actors for thier performances, and that's fair. I thnik what Newman and the rest are talking about is fair and has been established before. You can't make money off someones image because it belongs to them.

Blame The Three Stooges and Elvis

This started years ago when one of the stooges was broke, died and left his kids with bills. There's literally millions of Stooges items running around but until they passed the law in so many states, you me or anyone could make a t-shirt using the stooges, or anyone else from the past, and keep all the money without paying royalties.

Regardless of the torrent community, which makes no profit, using someone to make money like that is kinda like being a pimp that keeps all the money. I don't believe in censoring or limiting people's creativity, but to do it at someone elses expense or without thier permission is a little shady.

  14. The last game I played online was Star Wars someting or other, but it's not much fun playing the way they did. I'd like to get into some games though, just to use the PC for recreational purposes instead of pretending to work. Anything that's "Run, Jump and Shoot" would be good, someone let me know please.

  15. Since I derailed this train let's see if I can set 'er straight.

What the intention was, we're all sure, is to keep someone from harassing someone else using email, and you can get an email acount anywhere and acccess it from any radioshack in the country. You get the idea, but it's the wording they should have straightened out. Actually, it's just a matter of eliminating anonymous harrasment.

Also remember that it only applies to a person who is intentionally annoying "without disclosing his identity."

and all this can be found at the same place on This Page

  16. For now the one and only time in history I have had a ligitimate copy of an operating system and it's XP SP2. I found a hacked version of vista already and boy, don't ya now it's tempting, but can't say I'm willing to let go just yet.
