After seeing the garbage and listening to the rhetoric from politicians, journalists and expert analysts I say all involved are idiots.

"Abo" isn't really a term people throw around too much, not even the idiots who were down at Cronulla. Aboriginals is more acceptable.

I do believe it was the Birtis who declared, after their first meeting with said Aboriginals, that the land was terra nulius. they then subsequently claimed said land for the crown and set in motion the whole dispossession thing.

Its a fucked up fact that 217 years later, there has still been no justice and not even an apology from the people in the know.

Any Sydneysiders here who want to make a stand against all that violence and bigotry should go to the "Unite against Racism" march tommorrow, meeting at Town Hall at about 1pm & marching up to Belmore Park, for this:

N.B. For those here suggesting that the riots prove Australia is a racist nation - there were about 5000 present that day. On the otherhand, the march and gathering tommorow has had about 5000 people organizing it alone. So yeah think about it, before you start tarring us all with the same brush.

Um, as an Australian I agree the situation is pretty messed up, but as for the whole country stolen from it's native population and therefore all Australians are racists comments, so are most so-called western countries if you want to look at it that way. As I recall the same could be said for the United States and many other countries and as far as I'm aware the American government has never apologised for the treatment of the Native Indian population nor for that matter what was done to the African - American population either.

And while I don't even remotely condone what is going on in Sydney, you may actually want to look at the cause of whats going on there, before the infamous SMS, gangs of people running around terrorising and assaulting poeple whatever race they are isn't a good thing and while it was a stupid thing to do the SMS was in response to another in a long series of events that have taken place in the area.

Racism is just something that's on the rise.... And maybe that might have something to do with western country's invading eastern country's... As I see the news every day I see that the world is falling apart... (if it wasn't doing that already.) There really needs to be improvement else a world war/chaos is inevitible. But let's hope it won't come to that...

And well if you're saying all australians are racists, you are just as worse as an racist.

I think perhaps that we're living in a world where the political leadership of the anglophone, if not the whole western world, is increasingly encouraging people to believe in simplistic answers. It seems to have become a political norm to seek out scapegoats, and politicians are indeed cultivating a fear of the alien and of faceless hordes of terrorists. For in that fear lies a powerful tool of political persuasion.

Is it any wonder then, that racism is on the rise?

Too right. It makes a politicians job a lot easier if he has the media on board as well.

I think the modern western world as administered by the 'Neo-con' has done away with the idea of accountability in regard to politicians and decision makers. We suddenly live in a world where the concept of society is somehow seen as seperate to the political climate in which it evolves, so the problems in Cronulla or in Redfern aren't a result of an organic system (and therefore manifestations and reflections of greater systemic problems) they're simply incidents involving a vocal minority.

In Australia we seem to have somehow exempted our decision makers from taking responsibility. If I went to work and lied on a scale as large as the Tampa, or fabricated evidence to indict someone IE: WMD in Iraq, I would be sacked and in all probability, taken to court. Where is the administrative mechanism to get rid of these dim wits? Democratic elections dont do the job. The Liberal party have to maintain membership of a coalition to win a majority.

I say we need some vehicle by which we can ensure the accountability of the legislature. Curent checks and balances obviously aren't enough and the seperation of powers act is a joke when you have a right wing christian conservative moron holding the balance in the senate.

It was all just a bunch of drunken teenagers,

urged on by neo-nazis.. who can text message.

What do you mean JUST?

Just thousands of young Australians chanting racist slogans?

Just falling in line with neo-nazis?

Just attacking defenceless women on account of their apprearance and faith?

Sorry mate, if there ever was an issue which can't be flippantly dismissed with a "just" - this is it. There are real and genuine issues in the Sutherland Shire, and there are genuine racial tensions in contemporary Sydney. And despite the willfully blind stance taken by the likes of our gutless Prime Minister and yourself, we're not going to tackle this nonsense by pretending it doesn't exist.

No problem was ever solved by burying your head in the sand.

You see, normal rowdy drunken teens don't suddenly get up & start thinking "Yeah - Let's do what the neo-nazi says!!!".

..anyway... So far there havent been any major incidents this wkend...

...and its sunday morning here now.

Are you so xxxxxxxxx that you actually believe that, there is still text messages going around as we speak, the only reason that nothing has happened is because of the federal police stepping in, this is one time when u thank god the police are around or we would probably have a full on war between the diff race's in each city, its absolute garbage.

And also the people who say that australia was "stolen" read your textbooks etc... the aboriginals were NOT the original settlers in australia and i do feel sorry for the lost children etc.. but why should we apologise for our forefathers mistakes?

MOD NOTE: Let's watch the name calling.

I think thats a little bit of a simplistic spin to put on what was happening here. JWH is famous for making throw away summations of these situations because his political career and the ideaology that underpins his neo-con agenda rely on it. You're a free thinking individual though who doesn't need to carefully select each little sound bite. Turn off your TV and stop harvesting your opinions from among the "Its ok, its aw-rite" side of the spectrum.

People do get drunk and people do act like glove puppets. This is far more insidious though and goes a bit deeper.

With regard to 'Sorry', Sorry Day and the like offer the community a chance to acknowledge the impact that forcible removal had on Australia's indigenous populations. You dont need to take responsibility for the actions of your 'fore-fathers' to feel or see that what happened was just plain wrong. When you say sorry, you're expressing an acknowledgement.

Oh and finally, if the Aobiriginals were not the original inabitants of this land, who was mate and what sort of wacky text books have you been reading?

WTF?

Sorry mate - have you been smoking too much crack or what? There is empirical proof that aboriginals have been in Australia for around about 40,000 years. This is conclusive.

As for why should you say sorry? Well for starters the common law title you or your landlord hold for the place you live - it exists because aborigines were dispossesed of that land. Dispossesed because the British Empire staked their claim on the Australian continent on a legal lie - "terra nullius". Even the High Court of Australia has acknowledged this.

I'm finding very little to make me proud of being an Australian these days... the 'war on terror', not signing Kyoto protocol, stolen generations etc. The recent events down at Cronulla have completely disgusted me. I cant help but blame the politicians and the constant stream of propaganda that is profiling muslims as an evil subhuman group not worthy of basic human rights.

I see Australia as a nation based on immigration, we should be celebrating our diversity. Australian culture is nothing without the various traditional cultures of our citizens.

There is no denying that Aboriginals were misstreated and even massacared in the past, the fact that someone else did it does not exempt me from responsiblity now. Saying sorry is the least we could do. In my opinion Australia has the responsibility to do whatever it takes, regardless of the cost to help Aboriginals.

LOL I must have been, i meant to say that the europeans were not the original settlers, there is proof that the chinese were the first ones on australian shores and it could have easily been them to colonize australia

I am so glad I live in Melbourne. Much nicer city. No underlying troubles like in Cronulla. Racism is wrong' date=' but it's always more complicated than that.[/quote']

With an attitude like that, we're awfully glad you live in Melbourne too.

To quote....... "I think we all have something to contribute to this discussion but I think the thing that you should contribute from now on, is silence".

Why don't you take you're value judgements and jam them in your fundament. They really dont help at all. Seriously, what sort of an inane contribution is that? "Much nicer city"? "No underlying troubles"? Where are you living lord Fauntleroy? Toorak? It wasn't so long ago that I recall hearing about Vietnamese gangs running through the Crowne casino with katana blades. I s'pose that rates as 'much nicer'.

Muppet.

Please consider what you've written before you press 'send' or 'reply'. It makes you appear like less of a w*** stain that way.

MOD NOTE: And YOU need to realize that everyone is entitled to an opinion. Even if you don't agree with it.
