Over the last 2 days, the Digg community has been in a firestorm over the posting of a processing key used for HD-DVD AACS decryption. The entire fiasco on Digg.com right now has only taken place because Digg.com and the AACS has tried to censor the posts. The processing key story isn't even new. The original story was posted to Digg almost 78 days ago. Why, two and half months later, have people suddenly started to care about the story? The firestorm started when a Digg story with the processing key was deleted. Once the post was removed, users began to post more and more stories trying to get the processing key back on the front page. Digg admin Jay Aldelson posted a message about why the posts were removed. The post sparked even more outrage as the community has fought against censorship. If Digg.com and the AACS had not made an attempt to censor the stories being posted, the articles may have gained a lot of Diggs, but it would have passed in a day or two, just as every one story does. People hate to be censored. Just look at the controversy surrounding Google when they announced that they would be censoring results in China. People also have short attention spans. To fight the censorship, users have posted conversions of the base-16 string in other bases, put the number in images, created HTML color schemes, and even started selling t-shirts. Digg and the AACS have probably realized by now that censorship never serves the public interest. All they have done is opened up a can of worms that will never be shut.

A pretty exciting episode overall. More than anything, I'm excited about next week's episode. One great aspect of this show is that they can toy around with alternate realities. I think it'll be awesome to watch what might happen, and then of course, wait to see how they avoid it!

This thread is dedicated to discussing ComCut. You can download ComCut at the ComCut website. ComCut was written to allow me to stream recorded TV shows from my PC to my TV without commercials. I use a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 with GB-PVR. GB-PVR supports an application called Comskip that scans the recorded video for commercial segments. ComCut uses the list of commercial segments from Comskip create a new copy of the recorded show without any commercials. ComCut is currently only designed and tested to work with GB-PVR and Comskip.

The Task Reporter website is located at vb.nitescifi.com. This thread is dedicated to discussion about Task Reporter. Task Reporter helps you keep track of tasks and to-do items that you are working on. The interfaced is designed to simplify the process of adding and updating your tasks. Each task contains a category, title, description and rich-text notes. Task Reporter keeps track of when a task is created, started, due, completed, and reported. Task Reporter has a built-in Auto Update function that will check for a new version at startup. If a new version is found, it will be downloaded and your copy will be updated.

I believe that as a crew, we should gather together in the conference room. We need to put together a list of clues and come up with a theory about what's going on here. At that point, we can ask the computer to clarify any suspicions that we might have.

I saw this on DIGG: http://tremulous.net/. It's a multi-player only game. Since it requires multiple players, perhaps this is something that the NiteSciFi community could sponser?

Opera 9.2 has a built in developer panel (Tools -> Advanced), for those that are interested.

I just signed up and the user interface doesn't work at all. None of the links work. I can't go to a port, warp, look at rankings, etc.

In all the show's effort to be dramatic, I often find that I have hard time following the storyline. The show makes a big deal out of small moments. Can anyone really say what the plot of the episode was? From what I can tell, nothing really (important) happened. I also think that the new lawyer is a cylon. The moment I saw him, I thought he was.

The ship's Counselor has been acting very strangely since we awoke from the storm. The Counselor receives my vote for scanning.

Doctor: Unless assigned by our Chief Engineer to a more important task, your task is to use the upgraded internal sensors and repaired sickbay equipment to assess the cause of death of our crew members and whether there is a persistant threat to the crew.

Unfortunately, funerals will have to wait. The bodies will be stored in the morgue once power has been restored. Doctor: If the Counselor is in good health, I suggest that they be put to work. I'm no doctor, but perhaps what the good counselor needs is something to do. We need everybody right now.
