  1. I've been debugging the Paypal thing today. It's not accepting Pending transactions, only "Completed". I made a few changes but I won't know if it worked until another donation comes in, or my 'sandbox' accounts get updated (fake paypal accounts for testing).
  2. I just changed the karma to show just the total score instead of pos/neg. Since Q'ness doesn't actually affect anything, if it starts to cause problems then it's probably not worth it.
  3. Congratulations! Very exciting. I haven't had a chance to go a real Sci-Fi convention to meet any stars. But now that I live in the Bay Area, maybe that will change.
  4. NiteSciFi.com will be going through an upgrade this weekend, December 8 to 10. You should expect periods of down time, but we will make every effort to minimize the down time. If you want more information, please visit the Development Forum. Since March of this year, we at NiteShdw.com have been investigating a number a ways to move the site forward and provide new content. This weekend is the first step in that direction. As always, your comments and suggestions are solicited as we continue to move forward.
  5. I'm not a big fan of the character drama myself. I realize that backstory is important, but not at the expense of the real story line (i.e. cylons). If you look back at Season 1, you'll see that every episode is about dealing with the cylons, finding the new human-looking models, suspecting everyone. It looks like Season 3 will be moving back toward that, and I hope so. I want to see mystery and intrigue, not Starbuck doing Adama. I definately did not like this episode.
  6. There seems to be a problem where the update script is not being run on the schedule that it should be. It should run every 2 minutes but sometimes the script doesn't run.
  7. You know, in most areas you can get DSL for as low as $14.99 a month. It's not super-broadband, but it's still 4x faster than dialup.
  8. I believe that's a fair request. Any changes to the game settings, or do you want to try the same settings?
  9. Warning to cheaters: All ships with an invalid email address and all accounts with duplicate IP addresses have been destroyed. Approximately 50 fake players were removed from the game, leaving only 25 active players. This completely changes the landscape of the game. I've also reinstated email confirmations. Your password will now be emailed to you, which means you have to have a valid email address. I am also modifying the software to disallow a user to connect if another active player has logged in with the same IP address. Shame on you!
  10. It certainly would be possible to get the game here, though I've been waiting a bit to see if they would release the newest version to the public. I also found the game much more confusing and difficult to play than BNT, though that also makes the game more challenging.
  11. Sorry about the late reset, I was on the road driving to California, and I'm only online because I found an open wireless access point. I'll get the reset done in the next few hours.
  12. I don't understand why everyone is complaining that you were notified. There is a huge bold purple message right at the bottom of every screen that says that changes were made. Secondly, I only made the change because I announced a reset would take place in less than a week. I was hoping to take away the advantage from those that were just earning score by earning lots of interest. This was just a way to keep the game a little more interesting for the last week.
  13. Here is an article titled Copyright Jungle. It's an in-depth article on the state of Copyright law, how it's changing, and how it's affecting society and culture.
  14. I know that this is a bit late, but I just found this page on Digg Complete Hard Drive Data Recovery Guide
  15. Thanks to some generous people, I have been able to fund the next monthly payment. I will continue to sell hosting space with no monthly fees (unless you have a large site that's using a lot of bandwidth/resources). Shell accounts are available as well.
  16. I'd be willing to host your site for free on my server, and take you up on your offer to put a small google ads on the site.
  17. Actually, $60/month for a dedicated machine is the cheapest rate that I've been able to find. Even collocation services run about that much. Soon I'll be moving to San Francisco, so perhaps I can find a good/cheap collocation place there.
  18. It's possible that some of the questions on the quiz give points to two of the three categories, which may account for the discrepancy in the totals.
  19. At the beginning of this year I started renting a dedicated server at $60/month. For the first six months, donations and ad revenue was enough to cover the costs of the server, but for the last 3 months, I have had to pay for the entire cost out of pocket. My financial situation is severely strained, and I will be unable to continue paying these costs. To pay for the cost of the server, I will give away a free hosting account to every user that donates $10 or more. In addition, there will be a raffle at the end of October with prizes yet to be announced. Every $1 donated equals 1 'ticket'. If you have items that you would be willing to put up as prizes, please let me know. I will then post a list of all the prizes. The goal is to raise $60 a month.
  20. Do you know you are a nerd, a geek, or a dork? Find out here. My score was: 56 % Nerd, 30% Geek, 30% Dork

A kind forum member sent me a copy of the old IRC button, which I just put it. You'll see "IRC CHAT" next to "HOME" in the top menu.
  22. Read the original article In return for a slice of advertising revenues, Warner will allow YouTube to host its entire music video back catalogue and—even more unusual—user-created videos can use Warner songs in their soundtracks. Warner has done more than just "seen the light"; the music behemoth has had a full-blown, Damascus Road-style conversion when it comes to the Internet. Giving music videos away? Allowing consumers to use Wilco songs? Has the world gone mad? The music group will get a cut of the advertising revenue for ads displayed during videos that use its music. This is simple enough to determine when it comes to music videos, but much harder when a 15-year-old from Skokie throws a track into the school project she has just uploaded. To make sure that Warner gets its cut, YouTube is also rolling out a proprietary system for identifying clips of copyrighted music in its videos. This "content identification and royalty reporting system" will be rolled out by the end of the year in conjunction with the release of Warner's material. For artists who request it, Warner does reserve the ability to pull certain songs and videos from YouTube, but it expects this to be the exception rather than the rule. Not only is this excellent free publicity for artists (which has always been true for songs and videos on the site), but those artists and their labels now get paid as well. While it hopes to make money from the music videos, Warner and YouTube actually have a much more interesting revenue plan—enlist unpaid users to create content. Alex Zubillaga, the Executive Vice President for Digital Strategy and Business Development at Warner, said, "This agreement establishes a model by which content companies can transform consumers' creativity into a legitimate commercial enterprise that will benefit fans, artists and copyright holders." The idea is that users around the world will create fascinating videos which feature Warner music. When these videos are watched millions of times, Warner will watch the checks roll in. Judging by the quality of much user content on YouTube, this is an optimistic vision. Still, it's intriguing. Will users, if given the resources they want, use their time and energy to create content that will benefit someone else? The massive amount of material uploaded to sites like YouTube suggests that they will. If even a few of these projects become a viral hits, they could do great things for the bands in question (much like car commercial appearances and spots on The OC do now). Warner gets marketing for its artists, it gets paid, and it doesn't antagonize its fans. The Magic 8-ball says, "Savvy deal-making."
