  1. The blog has been down due to a security hole in the forum software that I use as the backend. Nothing in the forum was lost, except (due, in part, to my own haste to fix it) the blog entries. If anyone has backups of the RSS feed, I'd love to get a copy in order to restore the blog entries. In old news, www.niteshdw.com has been moved to http://www.nitescifi.com. NiteShdw's Sci-Fi Torrents has been, and will continue to remain, offline. This site is moving forward as a SciFi fan community which will be expanding as time permits. I encourage you to participate in the forums and submit your suggestions on expanding the site's content. We are looking for people interested in developing a SciFi themed website based on Drupal, or another CMS. If you are interested, please log into the forums and send a private message to NiteShdw.
  2. Fixed, though I'm still missing the icon. Someone is suppose to send me a copy (I can't find my backup).
  3. Has anyone subscribed to the NiteSciFi.com RSS feed? If so, I'd love to get copies of all my previous posts so I can re-create them. I only have a few. Unfortunately I forgot to change my RSS reader over from niteshdw.com.
  4. I thought I had posted a reply, but it looks like it didn't show up. I was working on fixing some minor bugs in the code, and looking into making some minor improvements. I believe that my tinkering must have caused some unintended side-effects. I've reversed the changes for now. If anyone suffered because of this, I'll gladly do what I can to fix it. (i.e., trade credits for energy)
  5. I can't see or load your image. You'll need to re-upload your avatar.
  6. DHT is a distributed hash table. When you load a client that has DHT enabled, even if you don't ahve any torrents in your queue, your client sends a request to a certain node server to obtain a list of other clients. Your client then directly connects to those other clients. You do not have to be connected to every client in the world for your client to obtain information. Even if you are only connected to a few hundred peers, your client will send out a request for clients that are participating in a certain swarm (identified by the torrent's hash). That request goes through the network and your client begins to receive IP addresses of clients in the swarm. Once you begin to connect to those clients, the Peer Exchange protocol will be used to ask the clients you are connected to about other clients that they know about that you do not. In other words, even if every tracker in the world was taken down and disabled, DHT enabled clients would still connect to each other and track the torrents independently. With DHT the tracker becomes optional.
  7. There appears to be a major security bug in Quicksilver Forums. I'm sure that someone discovered this, and then googled all the forums that use the software. No posts or users were lost. Avatars and attachments were all deleted. I'm trying to find everything that was changed. If you still notice anything, please let me know.
  8. It seems that somehow the forum software got deleted last night. I have no idea how, but I've restored it. Sorry for all the downtime lately.
  9. Fixed. Somehow the permissions for normal users got messed up. You should be able to view the board index now.
  10. After attempting what I believed would be a minor upgrade to the forum software (1.1.9 -> 1.2.1), the forum has managed to get completely mangled. The whole forum is skin based, and at every upgrade the skins always break. I even tried loading an updated version of the skin, but... Anyway, after 18 hours of screaming (and several attempts to revert to my backup), I think the forum is working, though it's a far cry from what it was before. All of this has made me believe that there is a better system out there.
  11. I had to edit the HTML within the galaxy.php file to shrink the cells. I added these as well. I'd be happy to furnish you with copies of the files that I've modified.
  12. We're not looking to replace the forums. We are looking at designing a new site that will become "www.nitescifi.com", which is currently unoccupied (it just mirrors www.niteshdw.com). It appears that I should have put much more time into developing the site before giving out the link. This is what happened: 1) We found out about a software package that is very flexible and met the goals that we were looking for. 2) I downloaded and installed it. 3) I made a quick post to see how it worked. 4) I posted the link to the fresh install. Perhaps what I should have done is encouraged people to look at the Drupal.org website, read about it, and give feedback about whether they think that this is a good direction for us to proceed in developing a new site. Again, very little (almost none) development or effort went into this (yet). All I'm looking for is feedback on whether the CONCEPT of a site that is largely user created content is the way to go. Since this was a fresh install with no tweaking or extra work, you'll need to create an account to use it.
  13. I am looking to expand the site to include more user creatable content. I have been introduced to a new software package called Drupal that allows users to create their own content, from forums to web pages to books. I installed the software with just the default options. I would like comments and suggestions. The capabilities can be expanded by downloading modules. I encourage you to look through them and see what we could include. You can access the new site at http://drupal.nitescifi.com.
  14. I was planning on watching this, but I read on http://www.trektoday.com that the roast was pretty raunchy.
  15. Help Wanted: I need someone with good Linux experience and know-how to help me correctly set up my Linux server. The main thing I need help with is properly setting up the email system. I have tried to install Postfix, but I'm not experienced enough to know how to get it running properly. My greatest goal would be to get a hosting Control Panel installed. I've found a few free ones, but I've been unable to get them working, especially since I'm not running Apache (though we can change to Apache if the Control Panel requires it). If you think you can help, please let me know. I may be able to provide some form of compensation.
  16. I think that some form of user created content is a great idea. We're open to hear ideas.
  17. I read an article that says that they are looking for "another outlet" to SG-1, and that they want to continue the series. This may mean they are looking at other networks, or other forms of distribution (direct to DVD, internet, etc).
  18. Could you point me to a post where that happens? I've never noticed this, but I use Opera.
  19. From what I've read, the Core 2 Duo is a much better processor all around than the Athlon 64 X2. For that reason, AMD dropped its prices dramatically on all its Athlon 64 / 64 X2 processors. I've never owned an Intel CPU (ever), but the Core 2 Duo is certainly a tempting offer. I wonder what AMD has up its sleave?
  20. That would mean editing the forum software, making it very difficult to upgrade. I'm thinking of a few ideas.
  21. You have to accept the security dialog or the chat applet cannot load. I'll change it so that you have to click on "IRC CHAT" to show the chat window, though I would like the option to be more obvious. The idea is to allow people that are online at the same time to chat about the same topics they may be posting about.
  22. The Forum now has as chat window in a frame at the bottom of the page. If you are logged in, then the chat window will default to using your username as the nickname. If you need to log in, click on the "IRC CHAT" button under the logo to reload the chat window with your username. Let me know if the chat window is abnoxious for anyone. I'd like to make it the default, but have an option to turn it off as well (that's not possible right now).
  23. Yes, I haven't gotten around to fixing that link. I'll try to get it going again. I could do something like G4 does on their Spock Market website. It actually uses the same plugin, but it's contrained to a frame at the bottom of the page. That might be cool.
