  1. Folding Space is an entirely different technology (See Voyager's "Prime Factors"). I don't think it has anything to do with reducing mass. Because even if your mass was zero you would only achieve light speed. BTW, we broke the speed of light 3 times already using different means. That's the good news. The bad news is the only thing we could accelerate beyond the speed of light, was light. Damn it.
  2. Interesting theory. I think #1 is the lie. For if you were in Mensa you would not refer to Shaggy as a "singer", it's an awkward and imprecise word that leads to posts like the one above.
  3. I think modern-day quality beauty shots of the classic design is what I'd like to see and with actual fans of the show (Manny, Judith, and Garfield) having larger influence I think those voices that like to change things for change's sake are quieter now. Personally I have my fingers crossed for some time-travel. Gene wasn't responsible for the changes from ST1->ST2. Watch the DVD of Star Trek 2, 4, and 6 with the audio commentary on and you'll understand it was people like Nick Meyer and Harve Bennet that were responsible for many of the changes between the first 2 movies. I haven't picked up TMP yet but I suspect that, yes, it probably was Gene who changed TOS-> ST1 but you also have to keep in mind how much time passed between the two. I assume the changes you're referring to are uniforms, language, and mission types - I could be wrong. I do know that Gene was a big fan of the whole "Kirk meets God" story. He wrote TMP and he backed Shatner's efforts to revive the idea in TFF but audiences never liked it much. Personally I think Scifi should at best make observations about religion, not reach out and touch it, ya know? Gene was also less than fond of the idea of making Starfleet more militarized but I think he was fond of the navy so they were able to appeal to that aspect of him to change the uniforms and make the language more consistent. And all the quotes from Star Trek 2? I'm not certain whose idea they were but I do know Nick Meyer is very well read...he's just a really smart guy with some fascinating observations that you really should hear in those commentaries
  4. Are you talking ratings or show quality? Personally I think DS9 raised the bar on all of trek beginning with the 3-part opener of Season 2. It opened the door for more than just 2-part episodes and was quite gripping. I think the show gained even wider appeal starting with "The Jem'Hadar" - nothing says we're better than TNG than blowing up a galaxy-class ship!
  5. I guess I stumped everybody. #1 is the lie. I am neither 25 nor do I live with my mommy #2 is directly related to why #1 is a lie (long story) and #3 is true because the amusement park is seasonal so I need to supplement my winter income...for now. Easy, #3 is the lie. By #1 you mean to say you never recline (i.e. lie down). #2 is referring to a lie you just told not included in your post. #3 must be untrue because if it is true, then that statement itself is NOT a lie and therefore in that instance you have told the truth making the statement untrue. I know, it'll bake your noodle - the point (trick) is lie has 2 definitions.
  6. To me, exploring does not a captain make.
  7. The key to that is "when he has no clue". Many professionals in the entertainment industry wear different hats, many of them trained and educated for more than one job - others less so. The best leaders are those who have worked their way up through the ranks and remember what it was be like to be in an entry-level position. Kirk always lead away missions and believed a General leads from the front. Picard and Sisko took the helm occassionally. Janeway helped out in engineering in 'Caretaker'. The best leaders get their hands dirty. That said, not eveyone can do it. Robert Picardo is a bit of a renaissance man - Brannon Braga is not
  8. I think bringing some of her emotions out was good character development but making her a druggie to accomplish that was somewhat unbelievable. They should've found another way to do it. And I don't think it would make her less unique, if anything it would make her MORE unique. A Vulcan without emotions is pretty common. A Vulcan WITH emotions who has to work twice as hard to hide them and falters every now and then is very interesting. Plus, let's face it, she was no Leonard Nimoy folks.
  9. I don't mind a slow-down in the action if it's dramtically interesting - this wasn't. *looks up* Holy Crap! I just made Lt!
  10. I think I just soiled myself. :p Romulan Outposts - Sweet! Earth's Moon -Awesome! Mars - Cool A Constitution-Class Federation Starship - HOLY CRAP! If the rest of the season's set to be as good as that I better start hosting Enterprise viewing parties!
  11. Since I guessed correct first... 1) I'm 25 and still live with my mommy 2) I once dated a woman who made $300 an hour but still wanted me to pay for everything 3) I am a manager at an amusement park and moonlight as a pants salesman
  12. I had a theory that Gore didn't contest the election results because a post 9/11 timetraveller told him he would have to oversee the worst terrorist attack in US history and that it would destroy the democratic party to be in office at that time, better to let the idiot Bush deal with it. Then they had their last election. My new theory is that someone (or some THING, gotta have that) added something to the Altantic and Pacific Oceans as well as the Great Lakes that increases intelligence and it has yet to trickle down to the "red" states. Really people I'm at a loss here. Do YOU have a conspiracy theory to explain it?
  13. I hate those stinking sites that just invent classes. I prefer to stick to cannon myself.
  14. Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges was a great one. Tears Of The Prophets didn't really resonate with me, perhaps that's because I knew why they had to kill her off beforehand. Since I thought it was forced I found it to be dramatically weak
  15. I AM a guy! I also hold an honours degree in political science and spent 3 months on feminism alone. You can have male feminists - I believe in equality not superiority. I also believe I'd rather go into space with a ass-kicker than my mommy.
  16. Braga needs to be shot. I like how reasonable and reasoned Billingsley's comments are, he seems a very intelligent man and I agree with him and I like the fact that he doesn't actually site less character development as a problem. I've done a little acting and a little writing in my day, sometimes at the same time (improv) and one thing I can say is that 99% of the time when you set out with a goal of "be funny", "get ratings", or "develop a character" you inevitably fail. Or if you suceed you do so at the expense of your (and your works') integrity. Manny Coto has the right idea. Let the stories drive the show. If a plot results in, needs, or causes character development that's great but whatever happens needs to be driven by the plot and the desire to tell an interesting, original, and entertaining story. Manny wants to tell the stories and make the episodes he would want to see. he has Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens as a part of his team and they can make anything possible (heck, they brought Kirk back from the dead!). I think some of the worst writing (Spock's Brain notwithstanding) came from your run-of-the-mill Voyager episode. I attribute this to 2 factors. 1) Stupid Directives like you need one episode each season to focus on each character but 7 and the Captain have to be central to every episode (the second I realized it was a Tuvok or Paris or a Kim episode I half-tuned out not because I didn't like the characters but because if it's just about one of them it can't be too vital i.e. 'Drive') 2) No one was having any fun except Robert Picardo and his episodes and contributions (he was as much a writer as an actor IMHO) were some of the funnier ones. (side note: I had the pleasure of asking Robert a few questions once and he apparently wrote an average of 2 lines per episode not counting the few episode ideas that were his from the start...thankfully the Voyager crew were smart enough to follow the "if it works, keep it" mentality) Conversely I think DS9 had some of the best writing ever (if you doubt me watch 'The Visitor' and 'Past Tense') because the writing team had fun. They weren't pressured from above, they didn't have internal power plays (why Ron Moore didn't stay with Voyager after DS9 ended), and above all I think they were fans writing for a show and a franchise they loved. They Voyager writing crew was doing a job (with Jeri Taylor advancing her hyperfeminist agenda and Lisa Klink trying to slip in as much erotica as she could) but the DS9 crew had fun and that translated through the small screen directly to the fans. Coto and the Reeves-Stevens have the right idea. I'm still undecided about Rick Berman, he seems well-meaning enough. But Braga thought TOS was irrelevant and refused to watch it before taking the job. He wrote a prequel to something he hadn't even seen! That isn't just arrogance but monsterous stupidity.
  17. I'll go with #3 You could be a ski instructor with two white car wreckages on your lawn but I'd imagine monkies are expensive so if you could afford one why bother with torrents? Plus if I had a monkey he'd be my avatar
  18. I AM a feminist and I don't like Janeway
  19. Wow, one bad episode and you're ready to fire all the writers and delcare the series a loss.
  20. Did she talk about leaving the show or the show just not getting picked up for a 5th season? I know she's annoyed with what they've done with her character, specifically during the Xindi arc. She felt that making her a drug addict and have sex with Trip was out of character. Trip agrees with her that he doesn't like the way the relationship has been handled; indeed he doesn't think the two should be having a relationship at all. Archer's agent was framed recently for rumours about Bakula departing, he shut those rumours down quickly. Phlox is unhappy with how one-dimensional the 4 lesser characters are. He's wondering if this is going to be like the days of TOS where Scotty, Sulu, Checkov, and Uhura were just there to support Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Personally I think Mayweather's the only one who's one dimensional and needs more character development. He's Enterprise's answer to Geordi - underused and with great potential. I just hope the guys at the helm of Enterprise haven't been given similar directives as the Voyager writer crew were - they were told EVERY episode had to focus on 7 and the Captain in the last couple seasons.
  21. One thing I found interesting was that this special transporter technology could explain how the Dominion managed to beam Eris from DS9 in 'The Jem'Hadar' and Kira from DS9 to Empok Nor in that episode with Dukat's cult (dumb episode BTW). I smell Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens' hand in that plot point. I love these guys, they're all about continuity and explaining the gaps left unexplained in cannon. (For a clearer example of their influence read Avenger and compare with the vulcan arc. They borrowed characters and plot points from the book.)
  22. TOS - Balance Of Terror (honourable mention: Let That Be Your Last Battlefield) TNG - Sarek (it's all about the mind meld) DS9 - The Visitor (I'll be honest, I cried) VOY - Timeless ("From Harry Kim...To Harry Kim") Enterprise - Twilight (Best episode thus far) *aside: now watch as everyone argues for The Inner Light*
  23. 1. DS9 2. TNG 3. Enterprise 4. TOS 5. Voyager
  24. To answer the trivia questions: Ezri Dax and Time's Arrow To answer the original question...I guess it depends on the ship I'm on... NX-01 - Hoshi Sato 1701 - Janice Rand 1701-A - Spock (the women are old but he's quiet and interesting) 1701-B - Demora Sulu 1701-C - There must be a hot ensign somewhere 1701-D - Troi, blue/green outfit 1701-E - Can I stay on the holodeck? If not, with the trill DS9 - Leeta Voyager - The Twins, or Satie...yea Satie's a good bet. She hot and won't be around to get annoying :p Overall? Leeta
