queenhank
George Takei, whom we should all know as Hikaru Sulu, came out of the closet on Wednesday. Discuss.
TFMF
hmm....i don't think there's much to dicuss really - i mean he just wanted to keep it quiet which is understandable - suppose now he is more confident and is ok about revealing this..... wahaha
Never cared much for his character. But I knew there was something "different" about his presence. I mentioned this in a thread a while ago, but it was circulating on the scifi boards that another "helmsman" was thought to be a gay character ST:Enterprise. ifilmco
Maybe I'm alone, but I'm a little confused as to why it has any relevance vis-a-vis the character on the show.
Guest c4evap
Here we go with another "gay" topic. WTF does it matter what his sexual preferences are??? SHEESH! c4 :(
MrDad
This is news? He's been shacked up with some guy for 20 years now.
Beawulf
I agree, this really doesn't relate to his character. They're actors, they act. I love star trek but I really dont care about the actor's personal lives.
wahaha
He has his own blog http://www.georgetakei.com/news-index.asp Snap, I've found some hillarious prank call clips from the stern show that use his voice. But I haven't been able to find the one where they impersonate ricardo montalban and call takei. they call a redneck and try to sell "lengthy black teenagers"
Tenebrae
He's gay? So what? It's more interesting that (supposedly) Geordi LaForge was going to be a gay character but that got axed and that there was going to be an episode about two gay crew men and strong allusions to AIDS and that was dropped at the 11th hour. TFMF
Exactly - if it were to affect his career then perhaps we should take more of an interest. But we learned this well after his career in Star Trek - I personally never had any idea that he was gay so i don't see why it's such a big deal - it dosn't change anything now. ifilmco
Exactly, just as I said before....it's not really relevant, therefore it matters not at all.
manjushri
Sorry to digress a tad, but this is one of my pet peeves: The phrase "to beg the question" means to back away from, or to avoid the question. It comes from the proper usage of "beg" as in to back away - not, as is so often misused - to approach or to "ask" the question.
ifilmco
FINALLY! Someone who knows the finer points of English! I had an eyebrow raised, but I thought it perhaps too petty to raise. I send you a hearty telepathic handshake. Way to go.
GorunNova
... and this topic is not in Mos Eisley because...?
manjushri
I wasn't trying to be pedantic - hope it wasn't taken that way - but I'm kind of in a "get things done" mood so I went ahead and risked it. For what its worth, kottke.org made the point today that with both 'Sulu' and Swoopes coming out has got to be good for the confidance of... >>First Swoopes and now this...the self esteem of young, gay, basketball-playing Trekkies must be skyrocketing. (I keed, but seriously, pro sports and sci-fi geeks could benefit from more confident & successful gay role models for young people who're feeling less than confident with their sexuality.)<< originally at: http://kottke.org/
TetsuoShima
Ah, nice catch! Since English is not my native language, I would probably never have noticed this and it might even have thought me some 'bad English'. So in fact it should read: "This begs the question: Sulu is gay! And lets not discuss it any further!" :) Right?
TFMF
well i think everyone gets the idea..... Mos Eisley here we go :)
TetsuoShima
Oo, actually I really was asking about whether I applied the phrase correct... If you want to discuss it further, be my guest... Sorry for the misunderstanding, but if everybody agrees, I'll be more than happy to transfer the topic....
