motoxjesse
With all the things he was capable of, he couldn't whistle? come on, why? And the whole thing about the verbs and what not, could not instead of couldn't? geeez, wat do u guys think?
TetsuoShima
Built-in limitation...? I'd guess after the 'failure' of Lore, the good dr. Soong wanted to make a new android that was clearly not human in it's abilities.. That might have been one of the ways he tried to do that. In the beginning at least... After the emotion chip, he could do several things he couldn't do before, but in some cases such as abreviations, he simply chose not to use them... Or do I remember it incorrectly? I'm not entirely certain.... As far as writing is concerned I'd guess that was just a way the writers wanted to make sure we understood the fact that Data had certain limitations in his mimmicing (?) of human behaviour... And that he wanted to strive to be more like humans... It was a good entry imo... :)
vystral
I agree. I think it was a scriptwriting device intended to show Data's falliability as an android. By making him seem inhuman, in a way, that makes him more human: a machine with imperfections.
motoxjesse
Yeah i guees that makes sense, imagine how it would have been if he was superior in every way...dont think i would like it. truthfully WE ourselves are but machines with imperfections, am i right? vystral
I guess whoever was responsible for designing Data's character probably put alot of thought into what we're talking about now.

Mav
I think it was one of the many things Soong intended for Data to learn or experience as he grew as a entity. Just like Data eventually learned to dream or adance his technology for emotions (the chip) I think at some point he could learn to whistle. I mean let's not forget Data can mimic any voice or sound he hears pretty much. He can speak in any language the Universal Translator can understand and tech him, and he can sing in just about any pitch or decibal that his body can produce. With that in mind I think at some point he can learn to whistle. Sadly at the end of Nemesis, Riker can't remember the song Data was trying to whistle when he first met him :( (pop goes the weasel for those that forgot)

Arktis
He couldn't figure out when certain things were inneficient, which never made a lot of sense to me for someone with a computerized brain. For instance, he would have shown Picard an entire sign language had he not been stopped, and there are various other instances where he continues to blather on like an airhead until somebody stops him. It's almost like he's somewhat autistic; very smart but a little absent minded and confused by things others take for granted, and constantly struggling with it. bones2097
apparently he couldn't digest... he ate food to be social but inside he compressed it & disposed of it in his own way (they never showed)... leading to the next fact... since he didn't really digest, chances of any gases produces were zero!!! you can guess where i'm getting at... yes data couldn't FART!!!! it seems data has been limted in the use of his orifices?? to contribute to the social atmosphere (that is speech only) :p ;)
motoxjesse
Ha well the jokes on you...cause he could mimik almost any sound, lol......so maybe he could
Arktis
I seem to remember that he said something in TNG about a liquid he was drinking at Ten Forward; that it lubricated his bio-functions. So I'd say that means he could digest. He can definately "go #1" (he's got male sexual organs and I doubt he pukes up his beverages), but as for #2, I don't know. Did anyone ever see him ingest anything other than a liquid? Did he eat Riker's eggs? I forget.
