kboz Posted April 4, 2005 Share Posted April 4, 2005 This is a very emotional thread and somehow that compelled me to add my $0.02 to the pile. Let me start out by saying that I'm a guy, I'm straight, but I have gay and bisexual friends, I'm an athiest, and I'm Canadian, just so you know where I'm coming from. Now let me just say, that while I understand what causes homophobia, namely lack of understanding and resulting fear of the unknown, I really don't like it and firmly believe that it can be dispelled by promoting understanding (I have seen it done). Furthermore, some of the behaviours that result from homophobia, discrimination and even violence, really make me sick. For the record, anyone who isn't ignorant knows two things. First, that sexual orientation is not a choice it's a state of being, and second, that homosexuality is not a disease. Now I want to talk about is gay marriage. This is going to give some of the fundamentalists out there the willies, but the fact is that societal acceptance of gay marriage is an inevitability. Canada's government may soon redefine marriage to include same-sex unions, but even if they don't, polls done by Canada's national newspapers have shown that there is 75% support for legal gay marriage in the 18-25yo age group. So, even if the current generation in power (the boomers) doesn't do it, my generation (Gen-Y as it's sometimes called) will do it when they're gone. I'd imagine the numbers are less in the States, but ever the optimist I can only hope it's at least a majority there too. the6ofpopes Posted April 4, 2005 Share Posted April 4, 2005 I have my own hypothesis on the why of homosexuality, but with elderbear lurking around it's probably not wise to post it I do hate myself sometimes - and this is one of those times. I'm trying to fumble my way through this, I have strong opinions, I've done reading & research, I've hurt and offended people by running my mouth. Can you share your hypothesis in the spirit of Trek? I'll post it tomorrow night, need to get some shuteye in a few minutes & don't want it to be rushed. I think we all have strong opinions on this issue, the only time I really get annoyed is when people go to far with the issues. Which is what has happened with the marriage issue in Canada & it's as much the politicians fault as it is the select few gay activists pushing it. The marriage issue is the same in both countries, just the route each is taking is different, my earlier post expresses some of my anger at what's going on here, but it's not anti-gay & I hope nobody takes it as anti-gay. Deleting posts you don't agree with only shows your own lack of discipline, and does nothing to discredit or improve the views you find offensive. You might as well delete all of my posts while you are at it if this is the way the game is going to be played. You're quite right. I acted wrongly. Daedrus Posted April 4, 2005 Share Posted April 4, 2005 The problem with american people is that they are too conceeded with their own religions to see that marriage is not necessarily a Christian-only practice. Gay Marriages are against the Christian beliefs, but people can get married in other places then a christian setting. In the end.. people should finally understand that regardless of the sex of the person one loves, we are all people and we should all be given the same rights and priviledges as everyone else. Unless you commit a crime against society, in which case you should burn. I think people should stop bashing americans. People vote based on whatever is important to them; whether it is their religion, gun control, economics or foreign policy, etc. Hey sorry I forgot to subscribe to the topic..
