    ST: Online

So I searched, found a few references to Star Trek Online, nothing really concrete. I was never big myself into MMORPGS. Played Everquest some, Asherons Call, DaoC, Planetside, Neocron, etc Current game of choice is Guild Wars (offtopic but you see where I'm going) Now, granted most of those are "fantasy" but also most of those I never stuck with long, mostly a month or two at a time. While I enjoy fantasy, like most of us here my real passion is science fiction. And as most online gamers, who enjoy MMO's know that science fiction MMO's are lacking, alot. Sure there's Star Wars Galaxies, or Anarchy Online or even the Matrix Online. But they just didn't draw me in. I like Star Wars as much as the next guy but even their game didn't do it for me. Working and grinding hours, apon hours, just to have a remote chance of becoming a Jedi wasn't my idea of "fun". MxO had a horrible combat system, and Anarchy Online was this strange blend of sci fi, fantasy and cyberpunk thrown together (though the core game is free online till 2007) But more too the point, Star Trek Online should be retail in at least 2007. It's a confirmed beta in 2006, though which quarter we aren't sure. Graphically, they could put it on just about any modern day MMO engine (please no EQ2 and it's monsterious requirements) so graphically they wouldn't need to code an entirely new engine, if they chose. The rest of the game I'm sure will take time. I love the idea of the ship-to-ship combat, and working your way up in ranks, FPS style phaser battles and using the Holodeck to do shit. Love it. It's the game, I am waiting for. There isn't many games coming up in the next two years, I seriously am looking forward too like ST:Online. I'm not a console gamer, so all the new consoles don't appeal to me much (though I'll probably pick up the next Zelda title for the GC since it's classic Zelda not cell shaded). PC gaming wise, other than maybe Quake 4 coming up, there's not a whole lot out there I want personally. Maybe we can get a sticky going in the ST section here? Mirror the official F.A.Q of the game as it gets updated and such? Info is a little slow right now since the game is barely in Alpha (assuming) but as it progresses like any game, it starts rolling in. Screenshots, dev chats, info on the game, gameplay movies etc Be nice to get it all in place once it starts. Thoughts, opinions, Bat'leths welcome
  2. after watching the 5th season of B5, theres no way he coulda copied it I know, or at least believe so, cause after the ending, it left me stumped. Like "thats it?!?" so I did some hunting, for fansites cause ya know theres bound to be millions of those, and found this one really indepth one with scripts and analytical views etc And as it recalled episodes of season 5, it'd often link to quotes or interviews or dvd extra commentary references to it all. You'd often see stuff said by J.M.S how fans asked him stuff like "why only 5 seasons?" and he'd always explain how he had this vision of the entire story, from beginning to end, every major event and character, and only had to actually film it all. How he had it all written and created, it just needed the time and actual ya know actors to make it happen. Alot of which came from his book and novel/novella writings from as pointed out, back in the day. Is it alot like DS9? Yes, hell there's huge similarities (spacestations, both with either wormholes or wormhole-like technology for long distance travel in a short time), but thats where it really stops. I mean, it took DS9 several seasons to get the "Dominion War" going and even when it "began" it was a slow process. B5 jumped right into it with Season 2, having already laid the ground work in Season 1 and parts of 2, and just escalated as it went on. DS9 did that as well they just did it much longer, on a much bigger budget (if I recall right B5 had to work smaller and tighter). The rest just falls into opinion. Good, bad, parody or ripoff, your calls personally. I liked both, loved both.
  3. 9/10 on dino's. gave me a chuckle, it reminded me of the killer bunny scene in monty python's holy grail (text could be a tad sharper though)
  4. 404 here as well i wonder if it has not so much as cliches, but just overused plot lines like in every damn trek there is, theres always some frakking nebula or shooting star or comet the crew has to go explore that always ends up putting the ship in danger that they almost don't get out of. and thats at least 1+ episode a season or the cheesy "alien lifeform made of energy" that always manages to take control of someone and make their character act or do things totally opposite of their normal character etc etc I mean these were cool, back in the 1980's but come on folks, it gets old sometimes heh..

    How old are you?

voted. almost 24 lotta people in the 16-20ish crowd. Woulda figured there'd be more 22-30ish, don't see too many younger people watching good old science fiction these days
  6. two parts (one unique, one not) i got started online about 10 years ago, when I was about 14. Was big into online gaming at the time, Duke3D and Quake were my firsts. I was big into for some reason the movie TopGun, I just enjoyed the dog fighting in jet planes and the characters (admittingly so the love story was crap). Also enjoyed the MegaManX games on SNES (the more common guess most people ask about) So I also loved the name Maverick which over the years I just shorted to Mav. the "sn" part came from back in the day, early days, of "Suprnova" back before it was a frakking house-hold name that was on TechTV or Discovery channel every night on some damn show. When I first registered on their forums, the name was taken, obviously, and so were just about any name you could literally think of. But at one point they had to immediately switch hosting for the forums cause they grew so big, we're talking like 50,000 users. So they regged a domain and setup shop for new forums. Unfortunately they couldn't port over the database, so it started clean. I was "fortunate" enough to register again, but with my typical name of Mav. And we all know the story of "Suprnova"'s fall from grace, and ever since if I register for a torrent site or torrent forums, I just slap "sn" on the nick cause usually either my name is taken, or rarely (yet still happens) I'll bump into some one "Suprnova" forum regulars (I was a typical poster in their tv torrent section) I woulda registered, as my normal nick (haven't found a "mav" yet here), but I already got a good share rating going on this one so I'll stick with it.
  7. I've yet to figure out how the forum displays images, in every post I just see some variation of Attached file: Engineer101 background.JPG (859 downloads) Engineer101 background.JPG (ill reply with my SS once I fix the setting that lets me view images)
  8. i always figured he got it from some obscure episode of kolchak
  9. Farscape, oh my underappreciated love. You'd think it'd take a while to warm up to this, but after three or four episodes, you're hooked. Great series, fantastic series. Sadly it only ran 4 seasons, and ended with a pretty frakking big cliffhanger. Though they did come back a while later and "wrap it up" with the Peacekeeper Wars mini series. Babylon 5, for years I hated this show. Even in 96', it's CGI looked old compared to DS9 and Voyager. But after season 1, you are hooked as the plot lines grow. You can't help but love every character, even those that do dark and evil things. Firefly, Whedon wrote it. Nuff said ;) Sadly it only lasted 1 season Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, great stuff. Though they are more main stream than the above cult hits, they offer a ton of entertainment, hell SG-1 is in it's 9th season, with a 10th planned already and no signs of going stale. If you like the idea of humanity struggling to fight for its freedom and defend itself, this is a series for you. Sliders, great series. Underappreciated by Fox, I don't think they ever take a sci fi show seriously. BSG (new one), absolutely adore it. I so want to build a Viper Mark II model. Again, struggle for humanity, this time at it's frakking best. I love how they went "B5 style" with the major fights being smaller ships vs smaller ships instead of just big huge ships, plus no fancy super lasers they still use good old fashioned bullets and nukes. Anything Trek. All of them. Love them. The whole idea of Trek, is one our society cannot grasp. Almost no racial hate, no poverty, very little disease, no need for a monetary system (within the Federation of course). Humanity's goal is self improvement and enlightment, meeting new cultures and learning, not earning a paycheck or doing hardcore drugs or anything that plagues real life in the real world. Shows I hate? I got a few Andromeda, well after watching Hercules, I just can't see Kevin Sorbo as a captain of a ship. Everytime I see that show its like watching Hercules In Space. The ship itself isn't that impressive compared to others, and isn't very original. Some of the cast are great actors, but I can't bring myself to watch it. Earth 2, just, no. Didn't feel right, couldn't warm up to it at all. Space: Above and Beyond, same as above. Roswell, it was Dawsons Creek meets Area 51... Buck Rogers, little too campy for me Planet of the Apes (series not movies), no...just..no.. Time Trax, oh dear god no... Jake 2.0, kill me now, please. Stuff I wish got more of a chance (other than the obvious ones) Quantam Leap, I never finished watching this so I don't know if Sam and Al ever got home. But great premise for a series Alien Nation, loved this and the movies.
  10. As I've made my way through various sci fi (alot thanks to nite), I finally got around to getting back into Sliders. I saw sporadic episodes years and years ago. Never saw the reruns on the Sci Fi channel here in America. And I noticed, alot of things just don't add up. So far I'm in late season 1, so if stuff gets explained in later seasons, cool. (speaking of which you can mention them, I don't care about spoilers at all) - The "timer" as it's called, opens the wormhole to other dimensions. How come this thing never seems to run out of energy? - How does the timer, manage to create a wormhole, on such "limited" power? By limited, I mean, it's the size of a cellphone roughly (from the mid 90's time period), so it's "batteries" can't be that large, and even the newer things like lithium batteries and such still have a self life unless designed to be recharged by something simple that is easily obtainable - How come they, I dunno, never let the time just run out?. The first double of Quinn we see, gets "sucked" into the wormhole when his timer activates it. But in every episode so far, the gang all have to physically jump/fall into the wormhole "before" it closes? If they can choose when to enter it, as such before it closes, why not just let it close and open another after it? Granted, its a tv show and they need plot twists and "drama" but it would solve every situation of "ah shit, gotta meet up with the others and slide out before its too late" - So far I've found seasons 1-3. I know there was a season 4 cause Sci Fi owns season 5 but alot of people say they don't rerun it or release it on dvd. So what is too happen of that? - How come each season is like 13 episodes?.. - How come Fox, even that far back (pre-Firefly fuck up) ran season 1 out of order? - If Quinn couldn't send a camera or recorder through the wormhole to test it, in the Pilot, due to the interferace frying it, how is it the timer makes it through each slide unharmed unless it happens to fall out of his pocket at the end of the slide? (same electrical properties as a camera, I assume?) - Sometimes, some of them will complain of "getting kicked" or "bumped" by another mid-slide, like in a crowded small space. Aren't they split into all kinds of atom particles or do they just not shell out the money for the effects of putting a human in the wormhole tunnel? - Isn't it a little, "ironic" every dimension usually one of the gang is someone well known, popular, in power, wanted by the law, dead, a murder, etc? Granted the infinite dimensions things means, literally infinite possibilities, and yes again its a tv show, but even after only 8 episodes, thats getting stale (still funny but it will get over done) great series overall, love it. quelching my sci fi needs between the fridays of new sci fi
